Help with Hydro Air jets with venturi air on an inground spa - missing wall fittings

Hi Everyone,

This is my first post in the forum.

I recently became a first-time owner of an in-ground pool and spa combo setup. The previous house owners didn't care much to maintain and use the spa, so I am trying to bring it back to its full potential.

The spa uses a venturi system to inject air, with 2 inputs, and there are 5 jets pushing water/air to the spa, powered by a Pentair challenger 2.5hp pump. When we bought the house, the pump was deactivated, and one of the jet orifices was missing which I replaced, and it looks like this: HydroAir Jet Orifice Gunite Extension Nozzle Threaded 30-4401
Interestingly enough, the 4 other jets are actually the twist lock type that look like this: HydroAir Jet Orifice Gunite Extension Nozzle Twistlok 30-4401T
I am not sure why the builder chose to do that. Ever since I did that the system works acceptably well but I am not sure if it can do better.

I have a couple of questions

1. The SPA jets currently have no wall fittings. When I turn on the jet pump and I open the venturi inputs there is a pretty good amount of air bubbles coming out, can I improve that by adding wall fittings? And If I do, which kind should I add? I tried adding these: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0D4D8FJK2/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1 but they created too much pressure that was kind of uncomfortable, and the water was being pushed out via the venturi vents, so I removed them.
2. After I turn off the jet pump, I have noticed air bubbles coming in from the suction side and accumulating in the strainer pot. I have made sure that the pipe fittings close to the pump are properly sealed and there are no air leaks to the strainer pot, or the lid. I am not sure why this keeps happening, is it possible that air is travelling back to the pump from the spa jets? Or I am missing something here?

Cheers and thank you!

Welcome to TFP.

As you found out, adding wall fittings increases back pressure, which messes up your venturi air. A delicate balance needs to be maintained between the water flow and the venturi air intake.

You can try different fittings but I doubt you will find one that works.

That is how your spa jets were built. When you renovate your spa, you may change them.
