Hi there, we have a salt pool and have had trouble balancing FC for the last few weeks. Just had a demand test done at pool place and it called for 37 gallons chlorine. They recommended we take the water down 2 feet, refill, wait 24 hrs and repeat. Then bring in another sample. Do we have any other options. Pool is in WI and 30,400 gallons in size.

Sounds to me like you talked to a chlorine salesman. What were your test results and how big is your pool?

By the way, welcome. This site is all about testing and treating your pool yourself. As you are likely about to find out, pool stores are pretty sketchy.

Yes, which is why it comes at a convenient time that I found out about this site! Results were TC 0, FC 0, CYA 41, pH 7.3, TA 162, Borate 0, Minerals 4433.
Pool is 30,400 gallon
Thank you!

Welcome to TFP!

We emphasize doing your own testing with a kit up to the task, namely the TF-100 from TFTestkits.net, or a Taylor 2006c. Pool store testing is notoriously unreliable and they always have the inherent conflict of interest of selling products to fix problems. Also with a salt pool being able to do your own salt testing separate of the SWG panel is a good idea.

I'm guessing by your salt level listed as "minerals" they are a Bioguard pool store? I seem to recall that's one of their marketing terms.

I'm a newbie, so I'm showing my work below, but I show you need 4 gallons of regular 6% bleach to get your FC up to target. Since this is a pool store, I'm guessing they had 10% or 12%, which would require even less.

Your target FC for CYA of 50 (round up from 41) is 6-8ppm, per this chart: Chlorine / CYA Chart - Trouble Free Pool

Per poolmath, you need 4 gallons of 6% bleach to get your FC up to 8. PoolMath

We do also test on our own, but with a Taylor K-1004 and since we're new at this we bring a sample to pool store about one a month. Our numbers matched up with the items that our kit tested and typically our pool regulates itself without much work up until now. They do sell Bioguard as one of their brands. So that's a possibility. Thanks!

Thank you so much for the help! Is it ok to add all at once or a little at a time? Never added bleach before, total newbie?
