Help finding source of "impossible" leak

So we have a leak that is defying explanation by three different pool companies and the internet. We have not yet ponied up for a leak detection company, mostly because they have not called me back.

Our pool is inground vinyl with a standard hayward sand filter, installed into the side of a hill. The pump and returns are all uphill from the pool, and even the backwash is at least uphill from the main drain. The pool is fine all summer, but as soon as we turn the pump off, it starts losing water. Left unattended (as in over the winter - it takes 2-3 months for the whole process), it loses water all the way to the main drain, as in, completely empty save for a couple of inches at the bottom. Over the course of the last three years, we have eliminated the liner as the problem, having patched multiple holes and then finally in July completely replacing the liner with a new 28 mil one. And again, pool was fine, then we covered it up and shut it off at the end of September, and when we went to fully winterize it this weekend, it's more than half emptied out again.

So basically what we have is a pool that only loses water when the pump is turned off, but when it does, it loses it all the way to the main drain, and it's not a hole in the liner.

Any thoughts or ideas?

b,

Sure does not sound right at all...

During the summer are you constantly having to add water to your pool or do you have an auto-fill?

If it leaks out to just a few inches, then the leak has to be at the main drain or at least around that same area.

Do you run with your valve to the Main Drain fully open , part way open, or closed?

Do you run your pump 24/7 in the summer?

How much water do you lose in a day, during the summer?

Thanks for posting,

Jim R.

And you've never noticed where the water goes? No wet spots in areas around the pool or under the equipment?

Where does your backwash water go? is it plumbed in to a drain or anything? Any overfill drains plumbed to drain someplace..?

Any problems with your multiport valve? I'm just wondering if its not seating properly in the right position and letting water drain somehow...?

Check your hydrostatic valve in the main drain after watching a few YouTube videos. Sometimes otherwise inexplicable leaks are from it getting stuck open. If you've blown out the lines and closed everything else, barring a multiport issue, that would be my next suspect.
