I bought a house last fall with a pool (my first). It's not in the best shape - needs to be replastered - but holds water and is still a blast to swim in.
I'm a DIY type of guy though my wife prefers to have "professionals" handle things, heh. I have enjoyed learning over the past few weeks how to chemically balance a pool. Lots of great info on this web site.
My wife and I thought our pool pump broke and let our pool turn into a swamp. Our intent was to have it replastered this spring, but with all the recent world events... we've put that off. I managed to get the pool pump running and have since turned the pool back to blue!
