Hi all. So I thought I would bring a little closure to this post. My pool builder came to look at my pool situation. He said my spa is 1,700 gallons. He told me it is larger than most and will take a while to heat the spa. He said to expect about 1 degree every 3 minutes. So to go from 60 degrees to 100 degrees I could expect about 2 hours. This seems rather excessive to me, but I guess it is what it is. We bought a solar cover for the spa. I haven't tried it yet, but I want to put the cover on the spa while heating, and hopefully that will help heat it quicker than if it weren't on. My logic is you lose heat through evaporation and if you can contain the "steam" coming off the water, maybe it will heat faster. I know that the cover isn't going to last long as the high temps will probably degrade it, but it was like $60, so it's worth a try. As far as heating the pool, we have had a cold spell here lately, but after tomorrow we should start to warm up. So I'm going to heat the whole pool to about 83 and then just maintain that so the grandkids will be able to swim. I know I will lose a little heat in the evenings, but hopefully it won't be too much, we'll see. We don't want to deal with an entire cover for the whole pool because we really don't have a place to store it or the room to clean it etc. In the past I asked about liquid solar cover, but that would be a last resort unless someone could convince me there aren't severe ramifications from putting that stuff in the water.
