The gasket/o-ring for the sight glass has dried up, so the seal isn’t there. Would a hose washer work as a replacement? I’m trying to save myself a long trip to the pool store.

Give it a try. I've used a couple, maybe 3, layers of a cereal box cardboard coated with silicone sealant. Worked. Jobs were "in the middle of nowhere" and a trip to a pool supply for a 50-cent gasket and a return trip was not going to happen. No extra charge, took 10 minutes with the scissors and sharp knife I always have with me. They were one of those, "Oh, by the way, I've got this issue too. I forgot to tell you on the phone."
Its OK if it drips a bit, most of the time, as the water is getting tossed anyway.
