Green to Blue, but still cloudy.

Newbie here with first post. 10 days ago I got the TF Pro Test Kit and started the SLAM. The water was pea green at first, and about 3-4 days later it turned powder blue, but very cloudy. Can’t see the bottom. This morning chlorine was 20 and CYA was 50. We did do the overnight chlorine test and it went from 23.5 to 20. Should I soldier on with the SLAM and expect the water to clear , or am I missing something? I did fail to check the PH before I started the SLAM, but I believe it’s too late now. Any help would be much appreciated.

Hi and welcome to TFP! You have done a great job so far!! Getting a good test kit and getting it to blue is HUGE! now is it time really. Keep up the SLAM until you pass the criteria. This is the hardest part of a SLAM. You can't see any change from day to day to the naked eye. What you should do is take a pic looking down into the pool at the steps or the brush on the bottom of the pool each day around the same time of day. That will help you see your progress day to day.

What kind of filter do you have?

You need to keep on killing the algae and filtering out the dead algae. Just know it didn't get that way overnight and it isn't going to be fixed overnight. Try to take a picture daily so you can see some progress. I've seen people get frustrated at this point and give up, or fall prey to pool store potions like floculants or clarifiers. Stay the course and hopefully you will be swimming in several more days/next weekend.

How often are you testing an replacing FC...I bet 2-4x a day...

That won't cut it in the heat of summer. If you can check and replace every 2-3 hours, it will really help the process along.

Get any ladder out of the pool, scrub it inside and out. Algae likes to live inside the ladders.

Thanks so much. I have a sand filter. Its been years since I replaced the sand , so I’m thinking to do that soon in hopes that it helps.

Yes , I’d say 2-3x a day. I’ll step it up and scrub the ladder too. The ladder is not often in the pool, but I’ll scrub off any tenacious passengers!

Sand rarely needs to be replaced. The main reason to replace it would be if some floc or such were used and put through the sand. Here is a link showing how to do a deep clean of your sand:

I had a green mess but the SLAM has about fixed it. I see the criteria for knowing when I can end the SLAM and move into maintenance, but the thought of water clarity seems a little subjective. Am I looking for crystal clear like a mountain stream. If so I’m not quite there. Does the CYA test give me any direction on clarity? Thanks!!
