Got Schooled by my Taylor K-2006C - Big thanks to TFP!

Yes, CYA protects the buffered FC before it's used. That's expected.
Generally - it's better to assume the CYA you added is there, even if the testing is not consistent.

My salt kit from Taylor has arrived (K-1766)!
Easy peasy, lemon squeezy, salt at 2800 ppm (same as output on SWCG, but good to have a double check).

Not having the what-ifs is priceless. (y)

What if I added salt because the cell said to and now I have to drain 1/3 of the pool, for example. :ROFLMAO:

Not much scale that I could see, but the salt reading was off, (-200 ppm), the light was flashing (check cell). I gave it a good hosing and 15 minutes of muriatic acid. Rinsed it, plugged it back in, and the reading was good (based on my Taylor K-1766 kit).

For future reference, the salt test has an error tolerance of +\- 200ppm. So don’t do any future cleanings if the reading is the only problem.

Never use acid without visible scale that you can't knock down with a popsicle stick. Then soak it in vinegar first to see if you can skip the much stronger MA.

Kept the plastic bubble cover over the pool for about a week since we are helping heat it up and are trying to prevent too much flying leaves and pine needles from getting in the pool. Temp went nice and high to 80.

FC 16!
CC 0
pH 7.2
TA 30 ! Added a couple of lbs baking soda
CH 275 ! Added ~5 lbs Calcium Chloride
CyA disappeared down to ~33!

Since I would like to continue to keep it covered with the bubble wrap a bit longer (weather is not cooperating yet), I was thinking that the high chlorine will likely continue to stay elevated, and that since there is not much sunshine these coming days, the low CyA would be OK. I did take my SWCG output to 10% and will monitor chlorine mid next week. Or do you guys think I have to add CyA now?

The CYA always gets rounded up so you are at 40ppm as long as it came from your own test kit and not a pool store. (A reading of 33 is kinda suspect 😉)

Was right between 30 and 40 which on a log10 scale makes it about 33, but I agree, and have read around here that it is not uber precise. I didn't know about rounding up. Thanks for that Bperry.

Kept it covered, with reduced SWCG down to 10%, did not add CyA and FC is at 8.5 ppm.

Cool, the test accuracy is only like +\- 10ppm at best so don’t even waste time trying to interpolate between decade numbers. If you’re off by 7ppm CYA it’s a literal drop in a bucket which is why TFP recommends rounding up so there’s a tiny bit off chlorine buffer keeping your water clean.

Brushing it weekly and keeping it clean. Water is clear.

I have a small leak inside the heater. Right where a copper tube meets a grey adapter with a screw-type fitting into the large white PVC. I tried tightening that fitting by hand and was able to do so but the leak persists. Calling someone to look into that. I assume this is under warranty from Hayward.

Here is a pic of the area.

CyA 50. Added some of that.

Raised the SWCG output to 25%. More sunny days .
