That is quite a drop of CYA. I wonder why? Have you been having to add quite a bit of water? Lots of rain?

Your CYA should be at least 30 if not 40. It should help you keep the FC in the sun better. I am not sure why you lost more one time than the another.

Yes, we have had about 4" of rain in the past 3 weeks or so. I have been thinking that I may have nitrates or nitrites in the water...I'm not sure which it would be. The well that I got my water from is in the middle of crop land. I wonder if the water was contaminated with nitrogen based fertilizer. I don't know how deep the well is, but I think it's pretty deep. The wellhead is not in a low area and has not been flooded recently. I know ammonia is a problem, but I don't know what effect nitrates/nitrites would have. Chemgeek....are you reading this? I barely passed chemistry in college. Ask me to identify plants, bugs or trees and I'll be fine. Chemistry...not so much.

OK, I did a search of the site and read up on nitrates in pool water. Basically it was written that as long as I'm maintaining an appropriate FC level, it should not be an issue. I would rather spend my money on more chlorine than a test kit that tells me I have nitrates.
 
Are you doing a lot of backwashing and water replacement? That could account for the drop in CYA. Also when you test the CYA try and have test conditions as consistent as possible. It is a very subjective test to read, so if you only test at mid-day in strong daylight with the sun at your back you should get fairly consistent results. You can also pour the test from the testing vial back into the mixing bottle and read the test again several times to get an average reading. Only read the result when you can no longer see any trace of the black dot. Sometimes it also helps to look away for a minute or two and then read the result again.
 
It took a while, but just now I finally got smart and ordered 2 bottles of reagent at the same time.

I left yesterday for a family visit. My pool was unattended for 36 hours. When I got back almost an hour ago, I could tell the pump sounded funny. A pool toy had gotten lodged in the skimmer basket and kept the weir from opening fully. The pump basket was full of leaves because the skimmer basket was floating and not doing it's job. The pump had also nearly lost prime. Thankfully, it was a quick fix and things are back in order in that department now.

My first test showed a FC of 7.5. I used pool math to bring it up to 17 and 30 min later when I tested, FC was 22.5. I guess I need to readjust pool volume for the calculations. :oops:

Thanks, slam is going OK. I just tested the water. FC is 18.5. I'll test at least one more time before bed. I just saw there is some dirt in the pool from the guys backfilling around the pool today. Cleaning that up will have to be a project for tomorrow morning. Because of the dirt, I don't even know if it's worth doing OCLT. What do you think?
 
Can this happen? My FC increased to 20 from 18.5 in 1 1/2 hours? I did the test like usual. The water sample was collected from the same location as the previous test and from approximately the same depth. The CC is .5 or less. I will do OCLT tonight. Wish me luck.
 
Failed again this morning, although it was closer to passing than I've been in 2 weeks. Two days ago I removed everything from the pool that I could. It was only toys, but I wanted to decrease my options of what could be causing the problem. The only thing in my pool is the steps. I had been leaving the pool toys in the water so they would be sanitized too, but when I removed them things got better.
7/16 OCL 3 ppm, CC 1.5 (removed toys)
7/17 OCL 1.5 ppm, CC 1
7/18 OCL 1.5, CC .5 or less

There were 2 pool noodles and willy the whale in the pool. If this solves my problem, I'm going to blame the noodles. There are more places for things to hide on them.
 
I'm feeling optimistic about my OCLT. My CC is lower than it ever has been. I'm barely getting the faintest tinge of pink when adding R-0003.

Do you think I should pitch the toys? Or, can I try to save them? Was it a coincidence that things are looking better with the toys out of the pool?
