First Test Kit Results

Just tested FC 8.5 ppm and CC 0.5 ppm and added the recommended 28 ozs liquid chlorine. How long should after adding should I test to see if it takes it 16 ppm? If it's losing that much chlorine or not holding to the 16 for SLAM what does that mean?

Give it 20-30 minutes with the pump on and you can re-test but... 28 oz is not going to get you anywhere near SLAM. By my math (effects of adding in Pool Math) 28oz will only add 1.9 FC.

You will need almost a full gallon, which will add 8.6 FC to your pool.

15 mins with good circulation should be plenty.

Don't test it everytime, you'll blow through your supply. But here and there it's good to verify you did what you thought you did.

If it starts at the expected 16, It means you're killing algae. The more algae you have, the more chlorine is needed to kill it. Brushing and vacuuming for will expose more with each round. Algae grows a biofilm to protect itself from harsh environments. It may be layers upon layers thick on the pool surface, and growing out exponentially in the water.

If you're around, testing more frequently helps speed the process at first. If you're out all day (work or such) then hit it every 2 to 3 hours from the time you get home until bedtime. When the FC mostly holds a couple hours, then you can go longer between tests/adds. Use the testing as you're guide. Right now, it's telling you to add more frequently with big drops at your testing intervals.

Aww OK. Interesting So why does Pool Math tell me to add just that amount? I can add more. I only bought like 4 gallons. I have 2.5 left should I keep a lot in stock? Does it tend to sell out in the summer? I was trying to buy it fresh since it said it only last a month. Also didn't realize how much I would need for a SLAM or for how long.Screenshot_20240327_194826_Gallery.jpgScreenshot_20240327_194517_Chrome.jpg

You have your bleach at 100% strength. Most chlorine is 10% strength or maybe 12.5 at the most. Look on your bottle and see the % and update that to give you an accurate amount of chlorine to add.

If you cant find it, post up on what brand you have and we can figure it out.

Up to 3 months old is fine, and use it within 3 months of buying it. Did we go over the date code ? Today is the 86th day of the year so the long code on the box/bottle will start with 24-086 or 086-24 if it was made today.
Also didn't realize how much I would need for a SLAM or for how long.
But HEY !!!! At least you're not afraid of the rain anymore. (y)

Ok. I just added the whole gallon 128 oz to the pool and turned on the inflor and water feature to help spread it around a little more. I've also been putting a separate much smaller amount in the hot tub. Using chlorinating liquid.

Thanks. I was wondering and was going to search the forum for an answer. It looks like ones I bought last week were 54 days and the new ones I bought this past Monday were January 24. I'll start checking the dates next time I buy them. I bought these from different Walmarts

What is the correct % is it indeed 100% or should it be something else. This 12.5% strength right?

Ok. The chlorine smell is strong in my backyard and on my arm from dipping my arm in to test. It should be OK for a bit. I do want to test later to check overnight test numbers. I did try to turn on the blower in the hot tub to circulate water and it seemed to have drained several inches into the pool and now I'm adding the water back into the spa. I need to stop while I'm ahead before I jack something up LOL 😅

I'm glad dates on chlorine bottles were mentioned. I just looked at bottles this week. Home Depot was still selling bottles with 2023 dates and Lowes had bottles with the 65th day of 2024.
How much is Lowe's chlorine? Walmart is $5.67. I just checked and it's $7.78

Walmart Pool Essentials is 10% strength. If you look at the label (bottom left I believe) it should say 10% with 90% as "Other Ingredients" which is mainly water.

Sometimes you can find good ones in the back of the shelf, kinda like buying milk or yogurt.

I do simple math in the store. I count 30s as months 54 is almost 60, so the end February. If you're one or two weeks off, that's plenty close enough.

What is the correct%
10%.

Sodium hyperchlorite........... 10%
Other (water)........... 90%

I need to stop while I'm ahead before I jack something up LOL 😅
I often have been there myself. :)

That's what is was all last year and so far this year. Home Depot is $8 each for their version by HDX.

All 3 are 10%

Hopefully now that you are really at SLAM level, you will start to see more results. I would still expect it to take 4+ days so make sure you restock that chlorine.

Good Morning. Ok so I figured out a few things yesterday when we determined I was miscalculating my chlorine because I had the wrong percentage. I added the gallon yesterday (app said 89 oz) and I added 128 oz which might be right because on the manual calculator I had it at 12.5% instead of 10% so even that was wrong. LOL. Anyway tested last night to see if I had FC 16 ppm and for the OCLT and it was actually 29.5 ppm. Might have been the spa draining into the pool when I attempted turning on air blower to circulate. Checked this morning before sun and it's FC 28 ppm. Do I just keep this amount and maybe just brush, vacuum and clean filters and simply monitor FC today?
