Most all pool lights can come out. The whole fixture is removable with enough cold to bring them up to the pool deck to work on (change bulbs). I would reccoment looking into that IF you can't complete your SLAM in a short period of time. I've seen photos here of folks who had solid gunk come out of those light niches once the fixtures are removed. I'd say that's less likely since yours hadn't turned into a green monster yet.

In the cracks where my fiberglass steps meet liner
Inside the mouth of the skimmer box (hidden)
In the stryrophoam of the weir door
Just few places.
