Hello!

I am looking for recommendations for a replacement for my Hayward Microclear DE-4800 filter. I bought it 8 years ago as a rebuilt from a pool service tech. It has served me well (I have replaced some parts over the years), but the last few seasons it’s been harder and harder to get it closed and then opened and closed again. I put it off until I could afford to buy a good brand new unit. I think I would like to stay with a DE filter, although I might like to try the cellulose fibers as an alternative to actual DE. I have a small, 6,000 gallon in ground fiberglass pool, and I’m currently using a Hayward Superpump 1HP that is 10 years old (the previous homeowner bought it just before I bought the house. I am thinking about getting a more efficient, variable speed pump as well, if I can afford to. I usually have my pool open by now, but I’ve had a crazy year and I am kind of dreading taking the cover off 😂. I would appreciate suggestions from the experts here 🤓

Filters are a commodity and they are all the same regardless of brand. Hayward or Pentair doesn't matter.

Where do you intend to buy it from and what is available?

Do you intend to install it yourself?

You have an MPV or Slide Valve on your DE filter?

I tried cellulose fibers in my DE fillter and found they clogged too quickly and required backwashing too frequently. It was more trouble then it was worth and I went back to time proved DE.

With a large cartridge filter you can probably clean the cartridges once a year when you close the pool for the winter.

Thanks for your quick reply! I will probably buy it online, from whomever has the best price/quickest delivery. Locally I have a Leslie’s, not sure what they have in stock. I have an MPV on my existing filter. I have a plumber in the family who will help with the installation (or shall I say, I’ll help him?) Since I’m not dying to have to do frequent backwashes I will probably stick with DE. I did buy a cartridge filter before I bought the rebuilt DE filter that I have, it did not do a great job, i had it a few weeks and I cleaned it several times. The pool tech I bought the DE filter from told me the cartridge filter was more suited to an above ground pool. Of course, that was 8 years ago.

See what you find available online and if you have a few choices post links to them here and we will give you our thoughts.

I should add that once my pool is open and clear I usually don’t have to backwash more than once or twice a season. I really wouldn’t mind using a cartridge so as not to have to deal with DE anymore, but the DE does such a good job I’m not sure I should switch.

Amy,

Let me tell you a quick story... I have two rent houses that have DE filters. When I built the pool at my house, I really, really wanted a DE filter, but the City requires a DE filter to be connected to the sewer, which was impossible, so I was "forced" to go with a large cartridge filter.

Now, about 8 years later, I can hardly wait for my rent house filters to die so I can replace them with a large cartridge filters.

Dirt simple plumbing, no backwash valve to turn or leak, no DE to mess with, and lower backpressure. And there is no way a human eye could tell the difference in water quality between a DE filter and a large cartridge filter.

You do have to open the filter to clean the cartridges, but in your location, that would be when the pool closes for the season. Cartridges should last 8 to 10 years. I am still on my original set.

I will never, ever buy a DE filter again.

Thanks,

Jim R.

Thanks Jim! I am definitely looking into a large capacity cartridge filter

To add to this, many years ago, before there were large-capacity filters (300 sq. ft. or larger) readily available, Sta Rite was teaching, " put on two smaller cartridge filters in parallel." Newer larger-capacity filters are, essentially, the same thing.

Replaced an old D.E. system with 2 150 sq. ft. filters for a very "unsure" wife who happened to be a research biologist at a local university.

Got the new system up and running, got paid and all is good, until I got a call a week later. The husband told me, "My wife took the pool water to her lab." which caused instant panic on my part. He then told me, "She said there is virtually no difference in particle count in the water." She would regularly test her pool water under a microscope. I was sold.

I started a post a couple of weeks ago asking for advice on a new filter, I currently have a DE filter and I’ve decided to make the switch to a cartridge filter. I am not sure which size to get, but I’m leaning towards a 325 st ft Hayward (or 425) I really want to replace my pump as well, I would like to get an energy efficient variable speed pump, if I can find something suitable that is currently available. I normally have my pool open by the third week in June, but I have a lot going on this year and then I had 2 does and 3 brand new fawns take up residence in my yard for a few weeks (the fawns had a blast splashing around on the pool cover). I am dreading taking the cover off, but i think I need to get it open. I did a lot of research on which capacity pumps and filters would work together and frankly, I’m a little confused. My pool is pretty small (6,000 gallons, in ground) and I know it doesn’t hurt to go bigger on the filter, I just don’t want to oversize the pump if I can avoid it. Also, i know the pipe used in the plumbing is 1.5” ( it’s an old pool) and I’m not sure that everything I’m looking at is compatible with that. I would appreciate any advice.

I am looking at this filter :
