Hey y’all,

New pool owner here. I want to know how long to run my filter every day? My pool contractor said to run it 24/7, at about 1800 RPM. I have heard otherwise, that it only needs to run 8 hours a day. Want to know which is best and what the benefits are.

Thanks so much!

Pat,

Many of us run 24/7...

I like to make a little chlorine all the time and I like to skim all the time. I also don't like the 'dead' look of my pool when the pump is not running.

The cost to run 24/7 with a VS pump is next to nothing. For me, less than $20 bucks a month..

I also believe, without any proof, that running the pump 24/7 is much better for the pump than turning it on and off each day.

What is your goal for wanting to reduce your current run times???

Thanks,

Jim R.

There are no hard numbers, but running the pump and SWCG 24/7 has an advantage of chlorine being added to the pool in small quantities all the time, minimizing a possibility of dropping its level below a desired minimum.
Also, verify that you really need to run your pump at 1800 rpm. It’s possible that your SWCG and the skimmers will have a sufficient flow at a lower rpm.

I didn’t know if running it 24/7 would reduce its lifespan. Thanks for the info, I will continue to run it 24/7.

Thank you for the info. I will play with the RPMs to see what works best. I will run it 24/7.
Thanks!
