eyeball check valve question

Is it feasible to repair an eyeball check valve? I have one of these:

And there is a black layer (some kind of rubber or similar material) which is the seal inside the spring loaded valve. It seems like I should be able to replace just the black piece with... what? It's decaying- black gooey stuff comes off onto my finger when I touch it, and it's not holding back water anymore. All the rest- the plastic screw fitting, and the metal spring all look good and seem to be working fine. It just doesn't make a seal- can I replace just the rubbery ring and save 32$?

Thanks for your help in advance.

Why is this even needed, please explain.
See here: small, elevated pool draining when pump off

The short version is I have a small elevated pool with a spillway draining into the main pool. In the small elevated pool, there is a single return which fills the elevated pool. When the pump turns off, the elevated pool drains through the return (water flows from the small elevated pool, through the return, and through the piping to the lower (main) pool. The eyeball check valve allows the water to enter the elevated pool when the pump is running, then springs shut when the pump turns off so the elevated pool does not drain. There used to be a "toilet ring" in the elevated pool at the height of the return, which has been solved by the check valve.

I had the same question as wireform.
Better option is a check valve in the return line to the elevated portion of the pool. The Jandy-type (even a Jandy is not that much more) are about the same cost as that eyeball and much easier to maintain.

The pipe which feeds my waterfall is marked with the "2" above (with the manual, hand shut off valve. There isn't an easy way to add an inline valve there due to short run of pipe. If I cut the PVC then I would need to do lots of cutting as whoever installed this originally didn't leave enough PVC between the elbows/bends to do a simple cut and replace. This a problem with nearly my entire system.

As an aside, "6" (automatic dichlor/trichlor feeder) leaked and has been replaced with a straight pipe, so in theory, if I really wanted to cut / modify PVC (I don't), I would probably have to remove the entire area encircled here:

For these reasons I went with the "eyeball check valve solution". In reference to Jandy valve being low maintenance, the eyeball lasted 4 years without me doing anything to it.

If you can find the parts.

Even if you can find the parts, they will probably cost as much as a new fitting.

Do you have a local rubber shop?

If yes, maybe they can custom make you a new gasket and repair this like new.

See what the manufacturer says.
