We just had our pool installed and the contractor did not put in an expansion joint between the pavers and coping stone. The pool at our old house had one, is it needed/not needed?

Yes, an expansion joint is needed between a deck and coping. The expansion joint protects the pool bond beam from cracking. It is an inexpensive insurance policy even with paver decks.
