Our dig day is 12/4. I did a walk through with the electrician this week and discussed what we wanted. He had no additional suggestions (weird, right??). I am a "do it right or don't do it at all" type of person... so I thought I would ask you all if I am missing anything...

We are installing a 16x30 vinyl liner sport pool. Running Pentair gear. Intelliflo3 VSF 3hp. IC40 salt cell. UltraTemp120 heat/cool pump. Coverstar autocover. 2x Microbrite lights.

I am planning to have a 100A sub panel ran to my equipment pad. In addition, i will have 120v convenience outlets on all four sides of the pool (tucked in landscape or on retaining wall). Power ran for a gazebo (ceiling fan and outlets). Outlet ran for my low voltage transformer to run lighting around the pool/retaining wall/steps.

What additional electrical design elements am I missing?

What about music? Will it be wireless - do you need outlets for that with a surge protector?

I like to have a dedicated CB with outlet for power tools that may be used in the yard in the future. Thinking about tools such as power washer, submersible pump, etc.

Don't skimp on the relays because they get used faster than you think.

If you have multiple lights, it can be nice to have the ability to control them individually rather than all or nothing.

So, you need a separate relay for each light or group of lights that you want to control individually.

You might need multiple transformers for the different light groups.

Is this pool and spa or just pool only?

If you have a spa blower, that needs a relay.

Outdoor lights can be on relays.

Ceiling fans can be on a relay.

Get the IntelliCenter that comes with the subpanel and the SWG included.

You want the ability to have the pump change speeds for different functions like heating etc.

I have conduit i am running back to the AV cabinet in my basement where I will have two Sonos AMPs running 8 total Polk Atrium8s.

Good thought on a dedicate circuit for non-pool stuff in the yard!

I had not thought about the pump / HP working together. Could I use the relay board option on the Intelliflo3?

I will have the wireless Pentair switch for the micobrites. Physical switch will be in the gazebo.

Thanks for the reading material! I will review it all.

I don't plan to do automation at this point... but maybe I should be??

Can I use the relay board on the Intelliflo3 to control sync the pump / heater functions?

No, the relay board will not coordinate pump speeds with the HP.

When the HP is running you will need around 40GPM of flow. When the HP is not running you can probably run the pump at about 20GPM or less.

The automation will coordinate the speed of the pump with when the HP is running or off.

Without the automation you will need to run your pump at the higher speed, using more electricity, all the time so it is at the ready for when the HP runs.

The IntelliCenter would replace the need for the wireless light controller so you net out some cost there. The IntelliCenter also replaces the pool subpanel you would otherwise need.

The pros above have you covered! One thing I don’t see mentioned though is a cleaner.
Whether it be a suction side, pressure side, or robotic cleaner you will want to make provisions for it. If going with a robotic cleaner you’ll want to ensure wherever it gets plugged in the controller is protected from the weather. Some here have come up with clever solutions to hide their controllers & the cables.
Many who choose a bot opt to still have a line run for a suction or pressure incase it dies since that is something that’s hard to add later. It’s always a good idea to have a way to easily manually vac your pool anyway.
About the electrical- in general it’s always better to have more receptacles so you’re definitely thinking about it the right way. 👍🏻

If you put in an automation load/subpanel, make your equipment light independent that panel. You never know when you may need to work on the automation panel in the dark. Either wire it from the panel supplying pool equipment panel or have a separate subpanel at the equipment pad.

I can't think of what cannot wait until daylight to work on the automation panel.

I am a night owl. I have worked on my automation panel several times while it was dark and I appreciated that my work light is wired independently. Sometimes it was by choice because of the Texas daytime heat; sometimes it when I was going to be busy doing other things during the daylight hours; others when I knew it was going to be raining for days and there was a break during the evening. My pool has only been filled for about 6 months and I am still changing things and adding items. I have done a lot of electrical work and I have probably worked on my automation panel a lot more than the average pool owner. A couple of days ago while I was putting conduit in for some additional landscape lighting along my back fence, I noticed the build electricians had pulled too small a neutral wire to my automation panel. I pulled a new wire during the day, but had it been August, I would have done the work in the evening.

I will admit it is only a nice to have, but I would definitely have it wired independently if I ever build another pool.
