Draining pool, what to do when refilled?

While I'm no expert, I'm in the middle of doing what the OP is asking about doing.... where.... after emptying & cleaning out my pool last month, it is taking me about a month (elapsed time) using a garden hose (at 8 gallons per minute but only about 1K to 2K gallons per day) to fill my pool with high total alkalinity well water with low calcium (for plaster pools anyway), where the amount of acid needed to add from buckets just to get the TA down to normal ranges is about 3 cases (a dozen gallons).

Other than dissolving the requisite CYA to 30ppm in buckets (to protect the chlorine from sunlight) and Calcium Chloride (to protect the walls & equipment from scaling/dissolving) to about 400 ppm, there's not much that is different from the daily chemistry checks and balances (AFAIK).

Have you tested your fill water CH? It's likely in the 250 ppm range. You probably won't need to add any calcium. Do you have a water softener in your home? If so, it'd be advisable to hook up your fill water makeup line to a softened water source. This will help to control your CH increase in the future.

You will need to make sure to keep the plaster wet or it could dry out and crack. This is not the best time of year to do a full water exchange.
