Dormant pool for at least 3 years - what can I save?

let’s tag in @cowboycasey for pump selections. He always has a great list for these. Cartridges can last 10 seasons when properly cared for with good chemistry. We’ll set you up GREAT with those skills when the time comes.

Thanks I guess if I could just get a clean start we might be able to manage this time (less things in our lives now eating up free time than we used to)

I would keep the sand filter(Do you have pictures of the filter). Just do a deep cleaning.

probably leaning towards replacing and moving it next to the pool itself. Just have to figure out what to get and see how much it will set me back.

Did get a guy an hour from me to finally quote me on liner replacement -$1200 yikes! And I have to do the work to empty the pool, clean out the gunk etc. He won't do anything with the liner once removed, won't work with the old equipment at all but will hook up the new equipment if I have it. he will only use hoses to hook and not hard plumbing.

Man have things changed.

You called :)

You have good equipment in your signature. A 2 speed pump will work great and a 300 pound sand filter will also work just fine... the pipe will clean out once you run it with chlorine after a couple hours..

If you keep the pump you can get a pump rebuild kit with new salt or SCS seals if it it leaking after you start it up..

If the liner is still good and holding water there is no need to get a new one.. Just pay 2 to 3 teenagers 100 dollars a piece to empty the pool and get all the junk out..

Fill up the pool
Deep clean the sand filter
and fire up the pump..

SLAM from there..

This will cost you chlorine and teenagers off from school manual labor and a new test kit... Maybe 500 dollars for everything :)

If you really want a new motor to connect to your pump we can go there..

But is it not true that once I drain the pool, clean the muck the liner is not reuseable? I mean that's what I have read before.

And this process would take some time meaning I have to drain it (guessing a day to do that) and then let the bottom and Crud dry out enough to scoop/shovel out. Won't the liner compress back in and not stretch back out when we refill?

I mean I have no issue draining, making the family get in the thing and clean it if we can salvage it. Getting the steps out will be a nightmare no matter what but that needs to be done for sure so that they can be power washed (my step set up is unique in that I took 2 step units and put them together to make a nice entry and exit for the pool - made the wife happy but Dang near impossible to lift out of the pool).

Of course no way are we getting in to clean it like it is, whatever we would catch from it is far worse than covid I bet (its bad).

I have to assume that the salt system is shot after sitting there for so long.

EDIT - I just found my equipment purchase invoice - Pump and filter are 11 years old - got them in 2010. Guessing its time to replace then or at least the sand has to be changed?

And we have done the Costco/BJs run for cases of bleach before.

The liner is not going to shrink.. you will not empty it all the way, leave 6 to 12 inches of gunk in the bottom and get in there and try to get everything in life out.... you could even put 3 gallons of liquid chlorine in there and try to kill as much of it off as your taking the big stuff out...

The more gunk you get out when it is lower the better.. Then fill it back up add CYA to 30 , drop the PH to 7 and start the SLAM..

If you save the liner and it works great, if it breaks or gets a hole in it you have a backup to get a new liner... :)

The salt system may not be shot.. once the SLAM is done we will start working on getting salt back in it and go from there :)

And with the equipment being 11 years old now should I just replace and move on?

Up to you. If it faired well not being used it’s really only 8 years old and could go for many more. It may have seen freezing at times but not like they do up north. You have nothing to loose by firing it up to see. Feel free to quit at the first hint of any issues, but why not at least try ?

Plus, if you can prove it works you can easily sell it for $100 or more. I got $200 for the pump and filter we inherited after moving with no promises given other than it worked that day. I could not have been clearer and gave the guy a 3 week warranty and he greatly appreciated my honesty and offer.

Ok and what is your recommendation if we replace based on our size pool?

hmmm, 11 years.... that is on the edge... Mine is 9 years old and still working great...

Does your pump look like this
yep that is the one we have.

Bought it in 2010 it died the first year and got a replacement from Hayward that year so still 11 years old. We didn't have any issues that I can recall when it was running but sitting for this long who knows. Guessing seals/gaskets are at least rotted by this point

I don't have an issue with replacing the equipment. If I do I can and would place right next to the pool. Having it in the shed was a bit of pain (tons of work for the install). Only downside (other than cost) would be redoing electrical line for it.

Here is a nice 1.4 hp VS pump... Waterway Power Defender 140 Variable Speed Pool Pump 1.4 HP 115V/230V - PD-140 - INYOPools.com

This is the V Green VS motor I have and has been great, I have a Pentair pump side not this pump.. Waterco Infinium ECO V-150 InGround Self Priming Variable Speed Pool Pump 1.65 HP 243150A-VS - INYOPools.com

And here is a great cartridge filter, should get you a year before you need to clean.. Pentair Clean & Clear Plus 320 Cartridge Filter - EC160340 - INYOPools.com

I bet there is nothing wrong with the sand filter, do a deep clean on it and you can get some DE to add when the SLAM is almost over and the water is just cloudy....

so pretty costly for replacement items then

Dumb question (maybe) would these items need to be hard plumbed (i.e. pvc pipe) or do they hook up with hoses?

you can do both but hard pipe is really easy to do and costs less.. It is better for the SWG also...

Yes, costs are out of control right now if you can find the equipment... If your equipment works I would use it in a heartbeat.. You have nothing to lose to see if your system works and everything to gain :)

I guess I will get this liner anyway as it is $500 and NIB anywhere else is over 1k plus.
