Does a natural gas heater need a regulator installed?

Hi everyone. I noticed my newly installed natural gas heater, pentair e40i 400k BTU, does not have a regulator installed in line.

Is that a problem for safety reasons?

Depends if you have low pressure or high pressure gas service to your house.

No regulator required for low pressure gas service.

If you have high pressure gas service it then depends if a regulator by the gas meter lowers the pressure for all appliances in the house. Or high pressure is run to each appliance and a regulator then reduces the gas pressure.

A regulator provides no safety benefit.
