Do I have to backwash everytime I start my sand filter?

The manual for my Summerwaves Sand Filter says I need to backwash and rinse everytime I start my filter, but doing this is causing a lot of water loss.

Is this necessary? Right now I am having to add water to my pool about twice per week and I'm sure I've lost CYA and salt this week.

Backwash the filter when the filter pressure rises by 25% over clean filter pressure.

You should not have to backwash very often.

That's only on the initial startup after you installed the sand.

Since your filter is so clean at the moment, make a note of the pressure on the gauge when its running. That's your clean pressure. When it rises 25%, you'll need to backwash and rinse again, but not untilthen.
