Dirt Residue

First spring with our new pool and we are encountering a recurring problem with what appears to be dirt on our tanning ledge, steps and benches. We brush it daily and it returns. We did notice it during the fall but it wasn’t as prevalent. The pool builder said to keep brushing and the sand filter would pick it up but it’s not happening. We have not vacuumed yet since he told us it would be filtered out. If we brush it, it makes the water cloudy. We have also noticed there appears to be more when we add chemicals or increase the percentage on the SWG. Any advice would be appreciated. We are working on getting the pool ready for the summer and this is a constant nuisance. I realize this is all a learning process.

Welcome to the forum!
Can you post a full set of pool water chemistry test results using your own test kit?
I suspect you have recurring algae and what you are seeing is dead algae.
I suggest you read through Pool Care Basics - Trouble Free Pool and even look at a few of our videos TFP-TV - Trouble Free Pool

I have not purchased my own kit yet. Any suggestions as to which is the best. I have been using a local company since I am new to this but plan to buy the kit and manage once I get this under control. What chemical issues would indicate algae? Please bear with me because I am new to all of this. Thanks for commenting…really appreciate it

You need a proper test kit. I suggest the TF-100/Pro or Taylor K2006C. A proper test kit is needed to get the accurate water chemistry results needed to follow the TFP protocols.
Persistent debris on flat surfaces can be from dead algae. You need to be able to accurately test your FC levels as well as your CYA level.
I would suggest you add 3 ppm FC worth of liquid chlorine per day to the pool until you can get a proper test kit and provide accurate chemistry data.

Here’s a link to the test kit recommendations. Pool stores and local companies have a pretty bad reputation for testing. Maybe you got a good one, but probably not, especially if you have algae. (Ie dirt recollecting in the same place every day)

Dodie, if you tell me how many gallons your pool is, I can tell you how much LIQUID CHLORINE to add daily until you get a test kit.
I use the TF-Pro SALT kit since I have a salt chlorinator which makes my chlorine (handy!).

We're happy to help you..ask any questions you have here and you'll get beaucoup help!
