DE filter issue

Hi, I have been searching here and have not seen an issue similar to mine, so if there is already a thread about this i apologize.

I have a Hayward 4800 series DE filter (new home to me, pool is almost 30 years old, and label is gone from filter). I have already replaced the manifold, o-ring, and grids. Now, when I turn the pump on, even with no de powder, the pump will run for about 30 seconds to 1 minute fine, then it is like it loses prime, I can see it still pumping in the basket, but it never fully fills. Also, the pressure gauge starts out at about 10 for those 30-60 seconds and then jumps up to 20-22. Now, if I switch the multiport valve to Recirculate, the pump can run all day with no bubbles in the basket.

Any ideas of what to look for or how to diagnose?

Thanks in advance.

Do not run a DE filter without DE. The grids can clog and you may not be able to clean them to get a good flow. That may already be your problem.

Do a Overnight Chlorine Loss Test in RECIRCULATE mode. If you fail then follow the SLAM Process.

What test kit do you use?

Post a complete set of test results.

Are you using PoolMath?

Thanks, had to unexpectedly go out of town, I will run those tests and post as soon as I get back. I don’t think it is any kind of Alger growth because we just drained the pool, had it resurfaced and it is doing the same thing at startup. I have put de powder in the skimmer, this time I used 80% of a regular fill. I will backwash once again and put in 80% again before I run the tests. I don’t remember which test kit I have, it is one of the ones they sell at Home Depot, my pool supply store was closed when I needed a kit.
