Hello.. to make a long story very short, I have one question. Some background 1st. Last summer (I live in NJ) I recall my CYA level being extremely high on the test strip. To be honest, I never really monitored it since I wasnt educated on what it does, and what harm is can do when very high. I was using stabilized shock weekly then, and tabs in both skimmers at all times. Fast forward to this spring, and throughout this summer, I have been in a chlorine demand situation for months. I have tried to slam on 3 occasions for only the FC to be gobbled up each and every time. (Please note I switched to liquid chlorine this season). Here is it August, and I still have the same issue. CYA level has been very low this season, about 20-30.
Now to my question. Is it possible to have super high CYA levels, and yet test strips and pool store diagnostic tests show low or normal CYA?? I am asking because I am at a loss, I don't know what else to do to fix this chlorine demand issue. I am the point that partial draining of the pool needs to be done. Could it be that the water is so old, that I am stuck? I have managed PH and akalinity all summer just fine, and occasional bouts with algae, but due to the lack of FC.
Any help or guidance on next steps would be so appreciated. PS my fear is that I close the pool in Sept, and come May next year its going to be a cesspool!! thanks!
