Sorry to be an idiot but what does the 4th column in the chart refer to? Is this the level you keep too after the slam process? I cannot see this column mentioned in any text I have read.
Regards
Peter
'Shock FC' is the level you bring the chlorine up to in a 'SLAM' or to shock. Some people like to shock after a large pool party or if the FC drops below minimum.
so if you go to the mustard algae slam level 60% do I still need to maintain the mustard algae minimum or is that if I have only completed the normal slam level?
Sorry again but I still cannot find any mention of the yellow / mustard minimum? - apart from in the mustard algae table? Is this the level I keep to after a slam, is it short term or forever? Why would it be different once the algae has gone?
“To permanently get rid of mustard algae, you first SLAM the pool normally, following the directions in How to SLAM Your Pool. Once you have completed SLAMing your pool in the standard way, raise the FC level up to the extra high mustard algae shock level for 24 hours. Use PoolMath, or see the Yel/MstrdShock column in the chart in this post, to find your mustard algae shock level.”
Is this the more detailed answer you are looking for?
Its not the normal shock level, its not the mustard shock level, OK I have read that I slam at normal shock level 40% of CYA then go to 60% of CYA, but what is the 4th column on the mustard algae CYA Chlorine chart all about?
Is it just to keep algae under control? - is it a minimum level to be used after slam? If so is it for a limited period or forever after? I just cannot find any mention of it in the places I have been directed to.
Is there something I am missing - maybe a brain or decent eyesight
Please see below:
That chart is outdated, it was the initial design by chem geek based on his and Ben Powell's observations of the effects on CYA on FC. It has since been revised and simplified and is kept there mostly for the historical value allowing people to see how the idea has evolved and how we got to where we are today.
Ignore it, follow the up to date [FC/CYA][/FC/CYA]
Oh dear I seem to be going round in circles here - It cannot be out of date it is the only chart that mentions mustard algae and other replies are still referring to it and quoting from it?
For Mustard Algae elimination and maintenance, the chart you showed above is what is used. For normal SLAM levels and daily maintenance the [FC/CYA][/FC/CYA] is used.
Remember, shock level for Mustard Algae is for only 24 hours. Then it is recommended to use the elevated FC as shown on the chart above for a period of time to completely eliminate the mustard algae.
Thanks for that - I thought I was losing my marbles. I hate to ask - the period of time? I do not mind forever
I have swam at way higher and still have my eyes, skin, some hair but more importantly my trunks!!!!
Period of time is tough to say. Most Mustard Algae is from contamination from lakes, streams, ponds, etc. It is actually quite rare to have Mustard Algae.
