Hi, I am new here and after reading some other threads here it seems like you guys have a lot of great knowledge about these expensive things. With that being said I have a question. So no matter what for the past 2 months I have been going back and forth to Leslie's and other pool stores trying to get help for this Algae. I will let the pump run constantly for days at a time putting algaecides in it and shock and it will clear up and they will say all my levels are correct, but two days later more algae is growing. four days later and its completely green again. I haven't been able to use it yet because of this. The worker at the pool store said it may be because the sand hasnt been replaced in ten years. I bought sand yesterday and replaced it last night. I have yet to run it this morning. Could that be the case? I am also recently having a blow back of water out of the skimmer and have to prime it each time I turn it on this season. Can you guys help?

Thanks!

Chlorine is the only thing that kills algae and you have to maintain the proper level of chlorine to keep out algae.
At TFP we have 2 cornerstone fundamentals- test your own water and follow the FC/CYA Levels recommendations.
Purchase one of these test kits - Test Kits Compared
We have a third key point - stay out of Pool Stores and do not purchase any of their recommendations. It is a costly event as you are experiencing.
A clean filter helps warter clarity but it does not prevent algae.

Are you using pucks for chlorine? If so, stop - purchase liquid chlorine (LC) at Home Depot or Walmart — called Pool Essentials brand.
How much volume is your pool?

Suggested steps
Add only LC to your pool. Need to know your pool volume
Purchase a test kit and post the test values
Get ready to perform a SLAM Process

I would also suggest posting the exact algaecides you used so the experts can tell you if those are causing any problems.

I have been here for a while now, and can tell you that what you are going through is what brought me to this site all those years ago.
The methods here WORK, make sense, and are repeatable time after time.
Not to mention the money that they save you!
This is what I have been dealing with for the past week due to some medical issues in the family, and as you can tell, I have it about licked... Well, the pool at least...

If I can do it, you can too! :)

In my signature below are a few links for you. I would start with the one that says "Pool School".

This is called being #PoolStored. Unfortunately, the pool stores don’t always, if ever, know how to maintain your pool. Their goal is to sell you more stuff. This is all too common. Your exact scenario plays out over and over. They sell you hundreds and hundreds of dollars of stuff to try to “make your pool clean”, but in reality they are just masking something and then you have to keep using their expensive stuff to try to keep it “masked”. It’s a never ending cycle.

I can tell you in my past year, I haven’t spent more than $150 on chemicals for my pool. 80-90% of that is liquid chlorine. $14 on one bottle of muriatic acid and $20 on stabilizer. That’s it. I even went through a SLAM where my water was ugly ugly, and all I needed was liquid chlorine. None of the nonsense the pool store tried to sell me, arguing with me that it was the only way to get rid of algae (algaecide).

So hang in there, follow these experts instructions and you’ll have a TFP clear pool in no time!

Thank you guys! If I can remember my pool is 25000 Gallons. I am starting today after work.
1 gallon of liquid chlorine (LC) (10%) will raise your FC level by 4ppm. So I would add 1.5 gals to get started and try to keep it from getting worst. But before you start the SLAM Process you have to have a proper test kit. Also, you have to test every 3-4 hours your FC so ensure that you get sufficient reagents to test FC. If you purchase the TF-100 kit you can add on a bundle for extra FC testing.
After you do the initial dosing, continue to add at least 1 gallon of LC daily until your test kit arrives.

We need to know all the numbers before you start.
