corrosion of electric heater

My electric heater element corroded after only four months use in my inground salt water pool. how can I troubleshoot problem? would a sacrificial anode help ? if so where should it be installed ? be installed ?

It might be bad water chemistry or stray current causing corrosion or maybe dry firing.

Does the element get hot when the pump is not running?

Does the pump turn off while the heater is still on?

Is there any chance that air is being trapped in the heater while the heater is on?
