Completely disgusted with alternative sanitizer

So now I am starting to question some things...
I backwashed the filter until it ran clear today, when I change settings on my multiport it gurgles and water will go out the waste port. Which also puts air in the system. Is this normal?

I used the air in the system to blow the lines out some and it belched some more baquagoop out of the lines and some more tissue paper.
I am starting to get nervous about letting it run out of chlorine, I cannot keep up with it in the afternoons. If I add two gallons it's gone in an hour.
I have gone through 24 gallons of Liquid chlorine.
I am wrestling with running to 0 and being vulnerable vs having less HOCL in the water but not losing all the chlorine.
What if Sunday I change the sand and stay in SLAM?

Ideally I would say no. Perhaps the spider gasket or key diverter is getting a bit worn & loose. Or perhaps while changing settings there was a slight pause that allowed it to happen? Not sure. But for now, as long as no water goes out to waste while on the filter setting keep focusing on the SLAM.

Ahhsome's website says it will increase the need for FC as the dislodged biofilm is freed and the previously untouched contaminants are able to be sanitized.
I ordered it this morning, and I will be adding it as soon as it gets here.

I think at this point I will change the sand tomorrow while I have daylight and add the CYA.
The fight with the biofilm is the concern at this point. Running out of FC or holding such low levels everyday between 1100 - 1700 or longer is impeding progress. I lost 2.5ppm between 2030 and 0130.
the fight with biofilm comes down to concentration and contact time. The biofilm protects itself in large part from contact, and the concentration is too varied if that even matters given the lack of true contact.
I am hoping that AHHsome will perform as advertised and give me the contact time part of the equation, I am hoping that maintaining a SLAM level FC will provide concentration portion.
With the amount of film I previously dislodged I cannot believe there could be that much more.

Biofilm is about surface area and i believe is more surface area in sand in the filter than on the piping. So changing sand would be my priority.
WOW! that is a great point!
My plans changed for today, so I am just checking the forum while taking a break from changing the sand at the moment.
I only purchased enough CYA to math out to 37ppm. I was doing the math in my head while trying to ignore the AOP sales pitch. I was going to start there and maybe stop by Rural king and get another 4# so I have the option to creep up if I need to.

I just went by the Pool School suggested numbers; dissolved yesterday. Got in the pool to brush yesterday evening after it had been dissolved for about 8 hours and the FC was below SLAM level.
Would you call this 40? @mknauss or @Newdude? that's where the dot wasn't plainly visible and I had to look for it.

When you do the CYA test, try this next time.

Once you have your solution ready, back to the sun, etc. Fill the vial to a line, say 80, lower the vial to your waist level and glance for the dot, you see it, add solution to the 70 line, glance, see it, repeat until you no longer see it with a glance. Then use the CYA value one step above the line you read. So if you stopped at 50, use 60 ppm CYA.

The vial is a non linear scale. So it is not reasonable to interpolate between the lines. Just use the whole numbers, such as 50, 40, 30, ....

Today was THE DAY! finally passed OCLT.
The pool is in Full sun from 7:00am to 7:30-8:00pm. I couldn't do SLAM levels all day, this likely slowed things down a lot. At 7am I could be at 14ppm and by lunch would be close to 6-7ppm.
I started "slamming" overnight from 7:30 til 7:30 and allowing it to drift throughout the day.
After adding AHH-Some! and scrubbing everything. Again...
I removed a return eye and got rewarded with all the gunk that it was stopping from coming out into the pool, so I decided to remove both return eyes and since I didn't like them I decided to order new ones that are 45s and help the skimming.
Leaving the return eyes out meant less back pressure on the system and when I installed the new eyes the floor return rewarded me with more gunk that had been festering down there since everything was basically coming through the walls.
After two days with full and proper circulation and vacuuming the the junk coming out of the floor return I found what looked like axle grease in the skimmers. Cleaned them again.
I've now purchased scum balls and skimmer socks.
But finally after all this time I have Crystal clear water, CC of .5 or less, and now OCLT less than 1.
Biguanide conversion and biofilm remediation complete!
