Cloudy water wont uncloudy ..

Given the results so far - what about pushing the shock level up towards the mustard algae level? Do any of the experts out there think that's an option? There seems to be so much demand that she's unable to hold the level high enough to get ahead of the growth.

By shocking higher - wouldn't she get a little more breathing room between checks - at least at night?

I forget what her target is and what the current CYA levels are at.

It is most certain that you are fighting algae. Do not rule that out, it's there and you're fighting it. The solution to the algae is bleach/chlorine. Really no way around that one. But it is also possible that you're fighting something else as well.

Does the water get greener when you add bleach?

Do you have a good result for CYA level? I can't remember. Have you considered taking it up to mustard shock level to see what that will do? (see CYA chart for this one, compare to the calculator and use the highest mustard shock level out of the two)

UnderWaterVanya beat me to it, so I'll take a second on the concept and say go for it.

Ive had the FC as high as close to 30s and was keeping it there for a while but then someone told me to drop it down to 20 so I did....so Ive been trying to keep it at 20 since then. CYA is reading 25 now...was 30 but I had backwashed and added a little bit of water so someone on here said that is normal for it to drop when adding water. im willing to go back up to the 30 shock level if I have to but had it there and still nothing worked. so??? I just feel at some point in time I should start seeing a change and there is none..it is more cloudy this morning than yesterday morning. Im almost to the point of trying to floc tonight and see if I can vacuum more of it out. ?????

anonapersona...yes but we tried it earlier on in the season and it did not work...in prior seasons..it worked.

I suspect that you have both algae and iron issues. The cloudiness is algae, but when that is licked you may still have iron to deal with.

It will always get more cloudy before it gets better. Cloudy means dead algae. Which is good. Cloudy dead algae is caught by the filter, and that can take a LONG time.

I honestly don't think floc is going to help much, if at all. Save the floc for after it's turned blue, if you use it at all.

I think it'd be a good idea to pull it up to MA shock level for today and tonight, and I'd say your CYA is fine for now. More CYA will only raise your shock level, which means more bleach.

What is your CYA level again? I assume around 50-60? If so you could try swapping out another 1/3 or so of your water to drop this to around 30 which will lower the level of FC you need to maintain during shocking.

This time frogabog beat me to it! LOL
2nd the idea of holding off on the Floc until the blue is back and the green is gone.

CYA 25? Wow - you're already at Mustard Algae levels per PoolCalculator and PoolSchool. Both say around 18ppm is as high as you need.

There was a question about metal asked - have you said in the thread before that you used a metal sequesterant?

Lastly, is this sand filter working? Is the sand channelled or otherwise not working? What's the pressure you see on the gauge and is it rising? I'm sorry if all of this has been covered I'm having trouble keeping up with the details. Also, how are you backwashing and when?

cya is reading at 25 right now...Ill bump it up to MA levels....see what happens. thanks for all of the suggestions/advice:)

I was actually getting ready to post that underwatervanya...I just looked at the MA chart and I am way above that....so?

Pump/filter is working good. It was running a bit high this morning..probably due to me brushing the pool last night and pulling up stuff. so I backedwashed/rinsed and now it is running normal for us. New sand last yr and we have checked for channelling..so dont know what else it coudl be. I have backedwashed twice since starting the shock treatment. It was up around 18 to 20 so I back wash when it gets that high...normal for us is 14/16.

Do you ever listen to CarTalk? I feel like we're playing "Stump the Chump" and I'm the Chump - LOL :hammer:

I'm really new to all of this - there are many more expert folks here that may have some more ideas, but my gut tells me that you should stay the course.

RE: Backwashing - I was so new to this I didn't know how to do it properly despite a neighbor who showed me "how" (close but not quite right). I read this and it helped me: pool-school/cleaning%20pool%20filters You've been at this a while so it may be no help.

Right... sooo... Here's what I'd do to settle myself if I was dealing with this pool. I'd get a bucket and fill it with the green water, enough so that it looks green in the bucket. Then, I'd put bleach in calculated for say... 75-100ppm. I mean, blast the water with so much chlorine that nothing can survive. Set it in the shade and see if the green changes.

That's my unapproved non TFP idea to see what could happen. If I saw a change, at all in the bucket... I'd open a can of POP.

LOL Frogabog....here is what is mind blowing....we have put it in a bucket....it is clear! not green...even when I was taking in water samples to the pool store..the water is clear. I can put it in a bucket and take a pic for you if you want me too. This is what blows my mind....lol My husband says he wants to rip it out. lol he is tired of messing with it...im getting to that point too. but here is new test results..ive been testing every two hours:

FC 21.5
CC 1

no bleach added.....

Well, one thing is apparent... you have 1ppm CC which means the chlorine is fighting something organic. That in, and of itself is the sign that there's algae/organics in the water that are being killed. That's got to come down before you can consider that the chlorine isn't helping.

Could there be debris still in the pool?

no debris in the water...even when I was brushing up the pool only a few leaves and bugs came in. I spent 3 days vacuuming it when I flocked it and there is nothing in it.

I will go down into the water to the third step and get water and take a pic I have a feeling it will still be clear. lol

Ok..I got into the pool..sat on the third step and took water from the bottom..it is still clear. here is the picture of it.

I meant the container should be deeper. Deep like the 4th stair is. Shallow water will be as clear as it is in the pool at the same level. the first stair is quite clear, second a little less, third and fourth stairs are nice and cloudy green... below that it's opaque green. So the container would need to be at least as deep as the 3rd and 4th stairs to be able to see the green at all.
