Cloudy Hot Mess

Hi there! I’m new to this group and painfully new to owning a pool. We recently bought a house and after we moved in we started to try to get the pool levels where they needed to be. (10k gallon/in ground/ Cartridge filters/ pebble tec finish)So of course, being newbies, we headed to the pool store. We bought the stuff suggested to us according to the water sample that we brought them. So fast forward a couple weeks, and several trips to Leslie’s. A friend of my husbands suggested we buy our own test kit and so we did that. Then I came across this group! After reading several posts, we were able to get our water within normal ranges:) That’s the background, now here’s my dilemma: We wanted ti do something about the awful looking stains that were on the sides and bottom of the pool so I tried the ascorbic acid test which seemed to work in the spot I tested it on. So we were all in at that point in doing the treatment. We lowered the chlorine, and PH and started with 1 lb of AA. We didn’t notice much of a difference after an hour or so, so we added more. And then more. I took the directions on here as meaning that if you don’t see a difference, then add more until the stain is gone, but after a total of 5 lbs, we just said enough. We did add an algaecide prior to the AA and then added a sequestrant about 12 hours after the last bit of AA. As far as the stain removal, we just cut our losses and started trying to get our levels where they need to be. I started by adding soda ash to raise PH and Alk and several hours later began to add chlorine (3inch jumbo tabs from Leslies)set at a 1 . After several hours, I bumped it up to 2, because I was kinda fearful about the amount of time having no chlorine. The pool had started getting cloudy and according to my testing(HTH 6-way test kit) ( I know we need the Taylor testing kit but $$ is tight right now with all the Crud we’ve spent on this pool😩) I needed to raise the PH and Alk more so I added more Soda ash. When I tested this morning, the Alk was at 100 but the PH had dropped from 7.2 to 7.0. Chlorine still 0. So in reading some other posts, I decided to go get some borax and added about half of a box( calculated with “pool calculator “) The water is still SUPER cloudy, like I can’t see the second step. What should my next steps be? I feel like I’m completely screwing this up and my husband is about to have a fit.

Current test:

Total Chlorine-0

PH-7.3

TA-110

Total hardness- 270

Couldn’t get CYA- I didn’t have enough solution 😩

Ok...first step is to STOP adding anything except LIQUID Chlorine. You can find jugs of liquid chlorine at Walmart in the pool section, or called "Liquid Shock" at pool stores, or even at farm stores and hardware stores. Add NOTHING else. Add enough to get to 5ppm (per PoolMath) until we know what your CYA level is?

I'm sure you've spent a fortune already buying bad things, but you really need to budget for a good test kit. Either the TF-100, TF-Pro from www.tftestkits.net or the K-2006C. Between you and me, the TF-100 or Pro are better deals in the long run.

With the junior chemistry kit you have now tell us all you can:
FC
CC
pH
TA
CH
CYA

Has your filter been cleaned lately? Were they discolored in any particular way?

How did you decide what type of stain you had? Any use of copper containing products in the pool (Clorox XtraBlue, for example)? Any known lead issues in your water?

Lets see if we can work out this problem and get your water clear and sanitized again. :)

Thanks so much for your reply! I did go get some liquid Chlorine earlier today:) I also took out the cartridge filters and cleaned them thoroughly today as well. I had previously cleaned them about 2 weeks ago and I’m guessing after the AA treatment, it got pretty dirty again. I tested a couple of spots on the steps with AA to see if the stain would lift and it did look to me like it lifted the stain some, so we just went with that, and decided to do the whole treatment. I wonder if I may be dealing with different types of stain. I’m not sure at all about the water supply here, all I know is that the water is hard. We moved here from out of state so it’s a complete change of scenery here, lol. I may be able to do some digging to see if there’s a public report about the water contents here. I’m also not sure what the previous owners used in the pool other than trichloro tabs and soda ash on occasion. I only know that because there were some empty buckets that were left here, lol. I’m definitely looking into a better test kit, so I’ll check out the ones you suggested:) Thank you sooooo much!

**Update ** I put liquid chlorine in twice yesterday after testing about 4 hours apart. Tested this morning:
TC-1
PH-7.3
TA- 100
TH-250
Water is extremely cloudy:(
We also ordered a k2006 test kit that should be here in a few days:)
I had ordered Pro Teams Metal Magic several days ago and it came yesterday, should I just leave it out or go ahead and use it? I had used the Clorox Pool and Spa Scale Stain and Metal Control after the AA treatment since the Metal magic was going to take longer to get here and thought I could just add the Metal Magic when it arrived. But now I’m not sure 🤔 🤷🏻‍♀️ Pump has been running non stop for several days, except for the time it took for cleaning the filters yesterday. Thanks for helping!5B591BB1-4777-4754-B99F-63EFBC717572.jpegAAFB3647-CF69-4AA2-8D2D-714DB69784DC.jpeg

No, please don't add it at this time.
Please raise, and try to keep your FC up at 5ppm until your test kit comes. You know how to use PoolMath for that, right??

Please note what your "clean pressure" is on your filter when you cleaned it. That's your baseline and you don't have to clean it again until it raises at least 20-25% over that baseline number. A *slightly* dirty filter actually cleans better.

<twiddling thumbs along with @Cmills96 waiting for test kit to come in>

Ok I’ll definitely hold off on adding anything else:) I’m getting the hang of the pool math and just added another gallon of liquid chlorine:) I went to Leslie’s earlier with a sample just to get an idea where my CYA was at. 😮😮😮🤦🏻‍♀️

<sigh> I don't believe there is any way to test CYA at 5ppm. I call hogwash on that test they did.
Hi! I finally got the new test kit in today! I just now got a chance to test it this evening:) So as of now the pool is crystal clear,(yay!) But I’m now trying to get my levels back to normal after the AA treatment. My current test looks like this:
FC- .6
CC - .4
PH-7.5
TA-100
CH-260
CYA- well, it’s not readable, it’s so low. See picture:) that is the water domed and about ready to spill over 😬
And I can still see the black dot🤦🏻‍♀️

There is some CYA in the pool, but less than 30 ppm. I would add 20 ppm worth of CYA using the sock method.
Target FC based on a 30 ppm CYA using the FC/CYA Levels

I took a sample back to Leslie’s ( I just don’t want to use up all my CYA reagent in like a week, lol) and I’ve definitely got some CYA in there now, but my phosphates have soared since my last test from there 5 days ago.( the one I posted above) it’s up to 2719. Can it really jump up that high in just 5 days?? My water is clear and perfect looking.

Stop going to Leslie's for testing. The most economical way to test CYA is to buy a pint of the reagent. It is very shelf-stable, so won't expire even when buying a big bottle.
