I am new to chlorine testing and just beginning my Baquacil conversion this morning at 7 am. When doing the drop test, I fill my vial to the 10 ml mark. I then add 1 heaping spoon of the powder. When adding the reagent, how "pink" is the solution supposed to turn? I have been stopping at the first tinge of pink. It only takes 4 drops to turn this solution clear. Since I am testing and adding every hour, this seems to say I am going from 16ppm down to two (1/2 of 4) in just one hour. This hasn't changed over the 1st three hours; but my water sure has; a lot in suspension and some tan-ish floaters on top. Should I be getting my solution to a darker shade of pink?

Thanks!

Once the water sample turns pink to red, it has enough DPD powder.

And yes, you will lose your FC that fast in a Baqua conversion.

Hi Marty,

Mine only gets pink, never red. I am using the blue spoon that came with my kit. It is what I'd call heaping. Should I use more, or wait a little longer for it to turn more red than pink, or just keep on doing what I'm doing?

Pink then -- I can rarely tell the difference!
One heaping scoop is enough. No need to wait. Be sure you are using your Speedstir.

Thanks for your responses. It's much appreciated. The little twinges of panic come and go...LOL. Back out to the "monster" for my 1pm test!

Continue the hourly's for how long, BTW, before it's time to skim the scum and vacuum to waste?

You'll know when you can extend the interval because it will be holding the FC better. You can remove any floating scum at any time. Get rid of it and the chlorine won;t be wasted trying to oxidize it.

I use the 10ml sample as well but according to the instructions that came with my Taylor test kit you are still supposed to use 2 scoops when doing the 10ml sample.

Attached is a photo of the instructions, note number 2 for the chlorine test seems to indicate 2 scoops whether you are using 25ml or 10ml. Is this not correct?

The test will work with one or two scoops. Taylor wants to sell more stuff.

My FC is still recovering from a SLAM but I will take a picture when it is in "range" to show you the difference.

Here is what you see at FC 38 CYA 80 (SLAM target is 31 so I was waaaay above)

Dark red means lots of FC

A normal pool should NOT look like this

*edit*
I added my "normal" FC for you to compare

This measured at FC 8 CYA 80

Notice more pink than red

Hope this helps
