Check valve in the skimmer? what does it do?

Weird. I have never seen that before. I know what it would do, but not why you would need it.
It goes in the 2nd hole in the skimmer that could be plumbed to the floor or an equilizer line. If the skimmer clogged or you made the float diverter force suction from the floor, then it would have to pull up on this check valve. When there was not enough suction , this would be closed. But, I really do not understand why it would be needed.

It's a way to keep the equalizer line closed until the float valve closes.
The main reason is to keep all flow at the skimmer weir to maximize skimming action.
If the hole is open, you get some flow through the equalizer, which reduces the skimming action.
It's not necessary, but it can help some.

Thanks James ... I suppose I could see that helping more if it was plumbed to an equalizer just below the skimmer rather than all the way down to the floor like my pool is plumbed.

It's only required if it is a public pool. Otherwise, it's a nice addition to boost the skimming operation but it's not essential.
That makes sense. For a second I thought this was for the suction side to stop the pump from losing prime.
