Change pump size vs filter size (above ground)

Hello, can I use a 2800 or 3000 GPH pump (intended for a 14" and 16" sand filter, respectively), with a 12" filter?

maybe... a 12 inch sand filter is really a small filter but those pumps really are not pushing that much more water... it may push sand into the pool...
