Cast iron fountain

So, the home I bought came with an 1800s era cast iron horse trough that was converted into a fountain.

I'd like to come up with a system to keep the water in it reasonably non-swamp like. No one will be swimming in it or drinking from it, and I have no outdoor pets.

I was thinking of just treating it like I do my pool, but wasn't sure if that would be a bad idea with it being cast-iron. It already looks like a piece of iron that has been outside for 150 years-- it's basically a rusty trough, so I'm not worried about a little rust-- I don't want to discolor it though, turns out it's somewhat valuable.

Anyone ever tried anything like this?
