Hi,

I have tried shocking my pool to unlock the chlorine, but I can’t seem to get the chlorine levels to maintain? I’m wondering if my CYA level is too high? I don’t want to keep wasting money dumping shock into the pool senselessly. I attached my current water analysis results. I have an 18x36 Inground with a vinyl liner. Thanks!

Hey B and belated Welcome !!!

Your pool store test shows exactly why we won't advise from them. I spent half the summer at 80 CYA, on purpose, with no issues holding chlorine. 'Chlorine lock' is made up nonsense to explain their complete lack of water chemistry knowledge.

Have a read, purchase a reliable home kit, and report back.

Test Kits Compared

In the meantime, download PoolMath and add 5ppm chlorine a day until the kit comes. It'll help it from getting exponentially worse. (Walmart pool essentials chlorinating liquid, not the CYA adding tabs/shock you have been using)

I will do that. Thanks so much for your help!

I am ordering the Taylor Kit
If it's not too late, the 2 kits from TFtestkits.net are no brainer values over the comp priced Taylor kits, all using the same Taylor drops.

I broke them down here :

I am going to order the TFpro I guess. Do you think I should add the SLAM option? Which stirrer should I choose?

Do you think I should add the SLAM option?
Being unable to hold chlorine usually points to algae. (It's microscopic so you can't see it until it's way too late). The SLAM Process needed to clear algae uses alot of FC tests.

Coupled with being new and needing to test more often to get to know your pool even if you dont have algae, yes. I think it's a good idea. :)

Which stirrer should I choose?
The rounded smart stir fits the TFpro case. Though I imagine you could cut the foam for the rectangular speed stir.

They ship pretty quickly. Should get it in a few days.

You can add about 4ppm of liquid chlorine until then to account for daily loss. Download the Poolmath app, configure your pool and use "effects of adding" to figure out how much that is for your pool. Once you get the test kit, post a full set of results and someone can guide you on what to do next.

Ok, so how often should I be adding the 4ppm of liquid chlorine before I test. I attached what Poolmath calculated for my pool.

Add a gallon every day. Be sure the pump is running when you add it. Pour it slowly at a return to the pool.
