By Owner in Phoenix: started up!!

Collecting orange inspection cards. Today we didn't pass because we need E.Q.P. bonding on the pool perimeter. Everything else looked good but one more orange.

Electrician coming back out, then next week the quest for pre-gunite green continues. 20220304_140656.jpg

Just now finding this build thread. Looks awesome so far! Glad things have been going your way so far..........yeah some orange thrown in for good measure but hey at least it is a pretty color!

Waterline tile-BOTH of those are pretty!! Make sure to open all of the boxes and go through them. Pick out and hide the "ugly" ones. The really pretty ones set out to go on the pool where your eyes will fall as you walk out to the pool.

Well it was a 3 week delay to get green on pre gunite with rain delay, a leaking check valve replacement and having a bonding step needing done with a backorder nut.

But we are now here and await shotcrete schedule.

Also all our tile and stone is on hand in the garage.

Just caught up my reading on your thread. Looking good!

Where did you get your coping and tile? I like the 1x2 glass tile (but we'll probably get 1x1 because that is what my wife likes) and I really like the waterline tile you picked out.

We went to NPT tile in Tempe. We are using RVCA Tile for all the tile work, stone on the pillars, mosaics, coping, and interior. Plus probably some other stuff. They have been great.

After our rains a bit ago, one of our corners had a bunch of dirt fall. In that corner the dirt is now up against the rebar in areas. I did some cleanup. Also, as we did backfill, dirt fell onto the baja shelf and is up against rebar.

Do I need to remove and fix all that? Get it back to three inches between dirt and rebar? Is this common and the shotcrete crew does some pre prep? 20220319_174457.jpg20220319_170953.jpg20220319_171153.jpg

But in better news, we did most of our backfill. Still work to do to finish the alley to the equipment pad, then get the heater over there, but lots of progress.

I laid out the drip system and put in the pump and plumbing for it, burying the box nicely. Pretty happy with the result here.

It is very common and you got off very lucky in that is all that fell. There is one where the whole wall of dirt AND rebar came down!!!

You do need to remove the dirt so there is space behind the rebar for the shotcrete to encase the rebar. I would get some gloves and start seeing if you can pull the dirt out. Do not try to pack it back in. Just get the loose stuff up and out. The shotcrete will fill in an extra areas left by the fallen dirt.

I would NOT count of the shotcrete crew doing any real prep work. That is the job of the rebar people and now you as the "owner builder".

We had a few small places where the dirt fell into a pile underneath where the lighting rough-ins were dug. Our consultant told us that the shotcrete sub should clean it out, but I should go ahead and clean it out myself. Luckily for me, it is only 4 spots that will not take much effort.

Things are certainly coming together and looking good.

Your filter is a bit too close to the house wall. I believe about 6" is the recommemded minimum clearance. This clearance is so you can tap the black band as you are tightening the clamp to create a good seal.

Don't forget to paint those 3/4" water pipes to prevent the sun from baking them. Use an acrylic based paint. The blue handle ball valves will eventually seize and need to be replaced. When you need to replace them, consider using brass ball valves and copper pipe anywhere above ground - a bit more expensive initially, but you will only need to do it once.

I like the progress! I had the same thing happen on mine, and I'm sure it happens on virtually every build. On one side I probably lost 2-3" the whole length of the pool. As was suggested already, you'll want to remove it. I ended up hauling up probably 20-30 5 gallon buckets of dirt, and more kept falling every day until the gunite got here. Luckily gunite is in now, so I don't have to worry about it.

Definitely will paint them. Good advice.

I didn't like those ball valves...especially in Arizona sun. I assume I'll be replacing them sooner rather than later.

Our shotcrete crew went thru and took out all the clumps and made sure everything was how it should be. There was a part in the deep end wall that they dug out quite a bit of dirt to make it just right. We had a great shotcrete company. They even came back out and added more to our spa floor because it was way too deep and didn’t charge us a minimum.

Who was your shotcrete crew?

Ours is coming out the day before for a pre site look.
