My guess is iron from all the white trim that looks brown in your tub.

I'm pretty dang irritated with this hottub and am ready to sell it. My fill water is iron and metal heavy, I'm pretty sure that's my whole issue. This is like my 5th dang attempt. I'm going to run the water through a softener and 2 (new) massive house filters and fill with that, and add "Metal-Gon" before shocking. If these black spots show up again I quitttt!! Lol

A water softener might help but the house filter probably will not as it will not remove dissolved iron.
