Salt Water Generator
SWG Type
Pentair Intellichlor IC-40
So we are in the beginning phases of getting pool designs from three builders all reputable larger companies. As I've read on this site it is interesting how different each sales pitch can be. All are pretty similar so I'm going to list some differences for discussion.

I didn't not have all equipment specs yet

We have concrete and awnings already in some areas
We need to demo the backyard grass and landscape to add the pool

Builder 1
Recommended salt water and included it initial price
Does not do quartz plaster
4 line loop return
Size approximately 29ft by 16ft
Swim lane goes 29 foot length
Includes roving cleaner
VS pump 2.5
Quick skim Venturi skimmeleaf catcher
Essentially everything in an in floor cleaner without the pop up heads
Deck is concrete with epoxy spray covering

Builder 2
Recommended ozone and included it in initial price
Recommends quart and States it has 10 year warranty where the plaster only has one (all 3 builders have one year plaster warranty)
Size approximately 29ft by 16ft
Swim lane goes 29 foot length
VS pump 2.0
Deck is concrete with epoxy spray covering (I think this one is a little different than the rest though just not sure how but will get clarification)
Cleaner extra

Pool Design Builder 2.jpg - Google Drive

Builder 3
Recommended inline chlorine tab feeder
Discourages salt due to corrosion
Recommended quartz and included it in price (I forgot to ask about warranty change)
Size approximately 29ft by 16ft
Swim lane goes 19 foot length
Sundeck and spa on the same side so swim area appears to be reduced even though all are approximately the same overall length and width
Includes roving cleaner
VS pump 3.0
Deck is concrete with epoxy spray covering
Didn't share any designs so no links to share

My thoughts
Salt seems the way to go, haven't seen much discussion about corrosion being an issue
I'm not certain about the benefits if quartz most discussions I've seen in here relates to the quartz application issues and not benefits other than coloring

Any additional thoughts would be appreciated

Welcome to the forum! :handshake:

Saltwater Chlorine generator is the way to go. Love ours. 4 years and counting.

Do you have a water softener for your house? If you can get a line to your equipment pad for daily make up water you will be very glad. I did not get one and have to drain/refill about every 18 months due to calcium buildup. Not a big deal as our water is pretty cheap.

Get a robot. Works wonders. Had a big dust storm last night here. Just ran the robot and brushed the steps in our pool this am and it is pretty clean. One more run tonight and it will be spotless. I would not get the robot from the pool builder.

I suggest you read Pool School - ABCs of Pool Water Chemistry and consider reviewing the entire Trouble Free Pool School book.

Hello and welcome to TFP! Some initial thoughts of mine:
- If you want an SWG (salt), get it. Managing your salt level is no different than any other chemical and doesn't cause excessive corrosion
- I like the roving cleaning if it's a robot type, not pressure or suction operated
- In line chlorinator (tabs) are for short term (i.e. vacation use) as the tabs increase CYA quickly resulting in water exchanges if allowed to get too high.
- In-floor cleaner systems ….. jury is out for me. Some folks get good use out of the, but occasionally there are plumbing or fixture problems. With good circulation and an automated robot, nit sure you'd really need that expense.
- Push each installer for filter info (type and size).

Thanks for using the forum.

I would go with SWG. I have had SWG pools for 30 years.

Quartz vs. plaster is partly cosmetic and partly longer life, maybe, it depends, and no guarantees. Getting a good quality plaster job with either seems to be a gamble depending on the installation crew and the day and the phase of the moon. There have been some good posts by user OnBalance on things to watch out for in your plaster job.

Roving cleaner is an electrical robot or a pressure Polaris cleaner? People will comment about the Polaris cleaner and tell you to do a robot. Whichever way you decide build the pool for both. Electrical outlet to plug in robot by pool and dedicated return line for pressure cleaner.

Have a water softener so I will look into a line being run, I think I read another post suggesting that as well.

I have extra garbage cans because of the storm last night.

The roving cleaner is not the robot type.

Thanks for the input everyone. This is my first pool so besides the technical I also wonder about some of the practical sides of the design features.

The one design from builder 3 cuts the swimming area down by a third because if the spa placement. I know this is not a lap pool but from a practical standpoint this seems like it takes away too much. This is my first pool so I don't know how much swim space I would need for the better half and two young children under 7. Any thoughts? I could always ask them to move the spa back some to increase the pool area but I think it would skew the symmetry of the dedign.

One design has a bench under one of the sheer decents, does anyone have their bench with the water flowing on you and how often do you use it that way?

We have a bench along one side of the pool with 3 sheer descents coming down on it. We love it. Use it every time we swim. The kids enjoy playing there, and it's very relaxing to sit under. In fact, wife and I just came in from the pool. We had the heat pump running and were just relaxing under that warm water coming down in the cool night air. For that matter, I highly recommend a heat pump! We were just talking about how glad we are that we made that extra investment. You can see photos at the link in my signature.

Edit: just noticed you are getting a spa as well, so no need for a heat pump, you'll have a gas heater for the spa most likely. Just make sure you can run the hot water or those sheer descents!

Length and width are as far as they can go based on yard size, but I will measure those to be sure of the billing. Too dark right now but will measure tomorrow, thanks for the suggestion.

Some dark pictures of the plumbing work done today.

At least they told you. Will you be able to be there for the work? There are quite few builds where it really paid off due to problems or questions.............Do you want x or y? or they were to make a beach entry and instead they were making it a shelf with a lip. Because the PO was there he was able to run out with the plans and they fixed it right away.
