Astral Salt Chlorinator - Low Chlorine Output?

Looking for some answers.

I have a pool with an Astral salt chlorinator, which since we purchased the house two years ago, the chlorine level has been low (under 0.5), although the water is clear. The original cell was only 7 plates, and of indeterminate age, so on a chance that this was (partially) the issue, I purchased a new salt cell (9 plates), but this has not changed the chlorine level to any extent. The salt level is in the recommended range for the chlorinator (6000 ppm), and the salt sensor does not have a calcium buildup, so I assume it is reading OK. The cell appears to be gassing OK, and the chlorinator is set on maximum (8).

On checking the cell, the voltage across the cell is 14.15 Volts and the current through the cell is 3.3 Amps, which could possibly be low, suggesting a possible fault with the chlorinator (??).

Questions:
  • What is the usual current range for a salt chlorinator?
  • Does anyone have a copy of the circuit for an Astral chlorinator?
  • Anything else to consider?

Do a Overnight Chlorine Loss Test and see if you have algae consuming your chlorine. If you fail the test then follow the SLAM Process.

Get a Clear Choice Labs test kit if you do not have one.

Yes, clear water can have algae in it.

OK, did the OCL test, and got the same figure (0.6) for both pm and am readings, so there doesn't appear to be an algae problem. Also, have an ongoing PH problem, and have to add acid frequently. 2 weeks ago, I added 2-2.5 litres of acid and managed to get the PH down to 7, but it's now shot up to 8.6 again!
(We have had a lot of rain in the last 2 weeks).
Still think the output current from the SWG may be low, and looking for some information on expected figure. Might talk to Austral next week to see what they think.
