Another Pool Build in Cypress, TX

Thanks, ITR! It seemed like he was here forever. So long that we became friends. His English was as bad as my Spanish. Thank goodness for Google translate app, except I don't type quickly enough. He really knew his stuff about installing glass tile. Take care. Suz.

Can you believe this storm we are expecting in the Gulf? I am worried about Hurricane season this year :( The weather has been just so strange. What is the next thing to do on your pool? Anything that can be done while it is raining???

One thing all Gulf Coast pool owners must have.
Industrial strength leaf skimmers.
I didn't think I'd need to get it out until the fall.
The season forecast was for seven named storms, three hurricanes, and one major hurricane to develop, a very quiet year.
Only problem is meteorologist are the most inaccurate bunch of morons God gave breath to.

Opinions, please..... I have about 14sf left of the Peacock blue tile (I ordered way too much). I think I'll keep 2sf for repairs, etc. So what to do with the remaining 12sf? We've covered about all we want to cover with glass tile. But I hate to leave that much sitting around.

My son suggested we put one row of tile under the beige waterline tile. I don't think it will really show much, so at worst, it shouldn't look bad. And it might add just a little pizzaz. We believe 12-13sf will do it (maybe not even take that much since all of my estimates have been too high).

A few stumbling blocks:
1. Our PB and the tile foreman are pretty much done with all this glass tile. I can't really blame them. It turned out to be so much more tile than I expected. (but I am paying for the glass installation and extra time for the installation, so I'm not trying to get something for nothing). So we don't have anyone to add the leftover tile.

2. I'm wondering if my son couldn't put that single row of tile around the pool under the waterline tile. We have the directions, and for one piece at a time, it doesn't seem too complicated (especially for me since I wouldn't be doing it). Thinset, then grout. With one row, I don't think keeping the tiles straight or evenly spaced would be a huge problem (again, not for me!).

3. We need to do it soon, so that the cure time is relatively close to the other tile - and this tile will be under water.

4. A tropical disturbance is forecast to move up towards Texas beginning tomorrow night. And we all know what that means. Not a whole lot until the rain and storms are on top of us - too hard to predict these things.

5. If I can talk my son into doing this tomorrow morning, would the tile be ok if rained on? I've read MrNica's description of the tile being installed in his entire pool. They only use thinset, no grout, just more thinset, and then they fill the pool with water. So it seems to me we might get away with it.

So if you know anything about installing tile, tell me what you think. It won't be the end of the world if we can't do it, or it doesn't work out. Thanks so much! Suz.

Do you have an area between the pavers you are putting in and the current back patio? Maybe do something outside of the pool with them? Or buy a huge planter for a palm tree and tile it? Oh or a table - do the top of an outdoor table! OH - do an outdoor SHOWER!!!! Use the tile for the bottom!!!!!!

Sick of this rain! SICK OF IT!!

Thanks, Wendy! Great ideas! I think I just had my head stuck on the pool and couldn't get away from it. We are wanting to do an outdoor shower, but it will be so simple - just a pole or pipe sticking out of the ground with a shower head on top. (we have no room left!!!). It's possible there would be a place for the tile somewhere around it.

I have to chuckle at your suggestion involving our current back patio! Here's picture... This has been our back patio since about March 1st! It once was flagstone. I'm standing at the back door looking toward the garage and backyard when I took the picture.

And this is what it has looked like since March 16th after the dig! We now have a huge mound of dirt just to the right of what was once our breezeway. We're almost blocked from going out to the pool. What's worse is the dirt hill traps our pond water such that it almost comes up to the back door after tons of rain - which we've had! That big board you see in the first picture has had to be raised twice. It now sits on 2 layers of those square concrete stepping stones The last two dry weeks have been better. Believe me, I know how sick you are of the mud and the dirt. I'm wondering if the tropical disturbance will really come over the Houston area. It's so hard to predict these things. Thanks Wendy for your suggestions! Suz.

Suz, i was excited to pull extra tile into the yard in other places. now that i wish i had your tile instead i'm disappointed but that's another story. lol. since i'm going with the southwestern/santa fe theme i was thinking of doing a mexican tiled shower or putting tile on a garden bed wall and i'll implement some tiles that my kids will make. yes, like Wendy says, u can tile so many things. i think pulling it into another area would be really nice! heck, our bathroom is one of our next projects. maybe i'll steal that idea Wendy! :)

Whatever you do it will be amazing & tie everything together!!!

Suz, I still have a my patio so I am not quite as "mud hut" as you. But the issues with the dirt backing water up into the wrong places. Scares me bad also, I dream about my house flooding every time it rains!! I'm just ready to be past this stage. I know you are too!!!

I would hold onto the extra tile until your pool is done. I LOVE the idea of a table top or a bench with it on top of it. We will find somewhere to put those for sure.

That will bring the pool out into the yard.

Love the idea of a table top! We have a woman down the shore who makes amazing tables out of tile. I will have to take a pic for you of ours, and the colors in her tile, bring all our Aruba teal color together. Also, she made us two options, so we can swap the tiles out for different looks on our tables. I think all of the ideas are great, to complement the pool and tie everything in together...

I agree whatever you decide on will come out fabulous :) Can't believe you guys are getting more rain. We had some last night also!

Sorry so late to the conversation, but I agree that using the tile to accents tables, planters, benches, shower area is a great idea. Once you pool is in, and you get the place pulled together, you will be able to see what areas need a little "bling". Those gorgeous, gorgeous will be just the thing.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions and encouragement! I do love the idea of bringing the pool out into the yard, a tie-in.

Paris: Thanks for letting me know. I may call Brian and ask if he will do the same for me and how long I have to think about it. But... since my glass tiles are not the usual size, he may not. But I know I can trust Kim and all the others to help me find a way to use them. Maybe even spend more money to do it!!! LOL!!!

Ummgood: Let me know if you're serious about it. I have 12sf left (well, 14, but I want to keep 2sf for any oopsies that might occur in the future). They are 2x1.5 tiles which I've ended up really liking. But you may prefer the true square. You might even get free white glove delivery if the timing worked out. I'm overdue a visit to my sister's, and I don't think ya'll live too far from each other (relative to Texas distances).

Suz.

I am definitely interested. Let me talk to my wife about it. It should be enough to put a row on all of our steps and tanning ledge to dress things up a bit.

Sure, just let me know! Suz.

I meant to let you know that each square foot is made of 8 rows of 6 tiles each. That might help you figure how much you need.

Suz, thanks for telling me about Lightstream. I told my PB that I will buy these light stream tiles myself and asked how much to install it when they pour the shotcrete.
PB wants $37 PER FOOT just to install it! We have around 40' of steps combined and it will cost $1500 just to install it. The tiles themselves cost $1200... so, we are looking at around $2700 just to have these accent tiles!

I can understand the cost of the tiles ($1200), but they are quoting more than the cost of the tiles to install! Wonder how much they charge to install in TX, though?

That sounds very high. None of my tile was installed during the shotcrete. It was installed like all the other tile except for the thinset and different type of grout. Maybe that's why he's quoting that price.

My PB has asked for $800 more for installation, but I think some of that has to do with the fact that I have it in places where he hadn't allowed for any tile. (like the spa benches, under the waterline tile trimming the sun shelf, steps, etc. But I also have quite a bit where he did allow for tile, so maybe he's subtracting the cost for those materials and installation. Could you hire someone on your own to install the tile?

Also ask your PB if that's what he charges to install any glass mosaic tile such as those from the regular pool tile places like NPT, Noble, etc. Too many people use those, and I can't imagine PB's charging that much more.

Of course, maybe I'm in for a big surprise from my PB. It could be I will be paying more than $800, but I'm not asking!

What colors of glass tile have you chosen? It is beautiful! Take care. Suz.
