Another O/B in Arizona

How did you get Dallin to put a channel drain in for you? He wouldn't do it for me.
To be honest, he didn't refuse when I said I need one. For me, it was required to be either dual-skimmer without drain, or a channel drain. Of course the plumbers put normal dual drain pipes (you can probably see them in one of the initial pictures) so I called them back to fix it which they did.

The plaster company started the fill process before I could see the water meter so I had to estimate how much was already in. Based on the meter, flow rate and water usage, I have 14000 +- 150 :) Will wait for a sunny day to post pictures ;)

I added metal sequestrant and turned on the pump. By Sunday I’ll add CYA and then start the chlorine.

Hi neighbor, I recognize your neighborhood :D
I have the same travertine, laid in the same pattern, I think the same pebble/plaster color and possibly the same tile (just a larger size).
It might be too late, but make sure that white grout on the water line is SEALED not just once, but twice. The white stains so easy with dust and algae. Ours was sealed but you can see a few places the seal wasn't good enough because it is stained brown from dirt. And don't use pumice stone on that tile either.

How and what do you seal it with? Do you drain it to just below the tile or at the bottom of the tile and just seal the top that is out of the water?

Great point indeed, curious on how to do it. I picked 2in tile instead of 3in because I didn’t want the water line sitting on the grout. I didn’t see any seal to be honest, just grout below coping and between tiles.

And I’m on my whits end trying to find a tool to unplug the skimmer pipes :( There are two 2in pipe plugs on the skimmer bottom, one is the drain and the other is the quickskim return. Each plug has 1-1/4 square head but not enough space inside the skimmer to turn it with a wrench. Any idea where can I buy/borrow/rent a tool for that?

That’s PLENTY good enough !! If your water level fluctuates +/- 1.5 inches it’s a difference of 841 gallons. As time goes on and the desire to keep it perfectly perfect height wanes, that # could swing to almost double. Many people will overfill a bit to buy more time before having to do it again. And then let it get lower than it should before sighing and dragging out the hose. The 14k # will rarely be seen exactly. :)

hahaha In Arizona it would be very hard without a water leveler, evaporation is crazy high. I finished setting it up yesterday, hope it won’t fail. Maybe I should set a water level sensor :)

We all have our unique area challanges. You guys have fill/evaporate and on the East coast we have fill..... it rains so we have to drain, then it doesn't rain again and evaporates, then just when we give up and fill, it pours the next day needing a drain.

Use a plumbers basin wrench. If you can find one locally they also make square sockets that go on an extension, but the basin wrench is common amd 20ish bucks
Thanks a lot, I had never heard of that tool before. I hope I’ll find one that is deep enough. Thanks again!

I got the tool today and it did fit the plug. However, it doesn't matter how hard I push, I could not get either plug to move at all. There is quite a bit of plaster powder around it, I think it got stuck with it. I reached out to a pool company that will come out tomorrow to remove it :) Thanks for the help, for other O/B trying to start up the pool, it is a good tip to try this tool as the pool gets filled. I think it would be a lot easier to unplug if the skimmer was dry.
