I am renovating my existing pool, which has a spillover spa. I have always had issues with calcium deposits on the tile. I am looking for an alternative to a spillover. Any suggestions?

If it is a total makeover including plumbing, then have it plumbed with valves so that you can turn the spillover off. Then just refresh the spa water twice a day. Also, keep in mind that it is a second body of water and test it at least once a week. You’ll want to manage the pH and FC levels in the spa, too.

The spa needs to spillover into the pool so that you can keep the spa full of fresh chlorinated water.. If you shut off the spillover completely, then some plumbing needs to be added to return the spa water to the pool.
Another option is to add a spillover mode to your automation.. Then run this spillover mode twice a day for an hour total.. This will not do away with the calcium deposits, but should minimize them.

You mentioned that to eliminate a spillover "some plumbing needs to be added to return the spa water to the pool". I guess that's my real question. What type of plumbing could be added to return the spa water to the pool?

You need to add an "overflow" pipe in the spa that would basically replace the current spillover.. So, instead of spa water going over the spillover, it would go into this new overflow pipe and into pool... In theory it would be hidden and not seen.
Spillovers work because no matter how much water you put into the spa, all the excess spillover into the pool..
You also need to keep the same basic Intake and Return valve operation so that you can still switch between the pool mode and spa mode.

We have the same issue with no way of turning off the spillover (that we know of). Also trying to reduce calcium scale. Would adding the extra plumbing to have a valve to turn off spa mode be plumbing that’s done underground or above ground (at the equipment pad, per say). Finished our pool renovation last year so def not up for any major work!
