Adding more bags of QuartzScape vs adding abalone?

Hi everyone, we are in the process of building out first pool and so far, we have decided on using NPT QuartzScapes Reflection series Barbados Blue. In looking at the NPT documentation, they talk about adding more bags of QuartzScapes for different effects. We were also going to add 3 bags of abalone at a price of $750 for all 3 bags. My question is should be looking at adding more bags of QuartzScapes vs doing the abalone at all? I am not sure which is the better move here so I was hoping someone can shed some light on the subject. I am not sure how many bags our PB was planning on using of the QuartzScapes in the first place and/or how much additional bags would cost but I have asked and will hopefully have that info soon. Thanks so much for your help!

I cant help you with the QuartzScape Reflection series, but I have seen several horror stories on here with abalone. The abalone can cause staining if not properly treated. Below is one such story. The general recommendation on here is to steer clear from abalone and go with glass beads and other inorganic materials that wont decompose and stain.

Someone said there are different ways abalone is treated. If it is untreated then that will cause problems. If it has been treated in whatever way they do, the it shouldn't cause a problem.

If it were my pool I would not add the abalone, and I would check to see what is in the extra bags you mentioned. If it is glass beads or anything else non-organic that can cause staining, I would say go that route.

we are doing glass and abalone I think it depends a lot on the plasterer ours has gone back and shown as plaster he did 10 years ago with the abalone shell that looks just like they were done recently— also we are going with a very dark colored plaster/pebble so even if the abalone shells deteriorate some it won’t look bad- I suppose it would be different if you’re using a very light colored plaster like a white..

I think the abalone has more to do with how their supplier processes the abalone and how they make sure that it is just the shell and not part of the abalone that was living. Chances are you are fine with Abalone, but the staining does happen quite a bit. This one just came in this morning:
