Acid wash or re-surface

Never did before. Quantatatively speaking roughly how much for this 20000 g pool?

Use muriatic acid to lower pH. Adjust the pH by 0.4 each time. If you believe you are at 8.2, add enough to lower the pH to 7.8. Continue to add, circulate for 30 minutes or so, and retest to see if you achieved the change. Use PoolMath Effects of Adding.
If you are draining and not doing a No Drain Exchange, use your backwash hose. Just do not overwhelm the sewer line and back up into your home. If doing a No Drain Exchange, use a garden hose. You wish to match your refill rate.

We can quibble about it being 7.8 or 8.2, but its definately not 7.2 so you can feel fortunate that the service fired you cause something they were doing was wrong.
So I went to "the effects of adding" 31.45% muriatic acid" and it looks like 1000 ml or roughly a qt will lower ph by .4. Does this sound correct?

That will work. Test your TA soon. Last was a month ago at 120. If that high, the pH will rise quickly

I think I am getting ready for ascorbic acid
Do I add more muriatic acid or am I good enough
Can't do this for 48 hours. Pool looks good but do I add algeacide now just in case.
I am going to:
1. add ascorbic acid
2. remove 1/2 water
3. do water exchange on the remaining 1/2 full water
4. top off.

If you are going to delay I would get some poly60 in the water for insurance.
pH is fine. The AA will drop it more. But for short period. When you first add chlorine it will be eaten by any AA left in the water.

Good morning everyone! So today is A-day ie ascorbic acid day. 48 hours ago my ph was 7.3 now maybe 7.5 so just added 1000 ml of muriatic 31.45% to the 20,000 G pool. How many "hours" is reasonable before I test it again?

Ps on the web people recommend overnight, few hours, 4 hours ie quite variable but I am trying to get this done today! I just tested pH 45 min after adding acid. The ph in shallow end is now 7.2.

Observations and mistakes:
1. Marked inprovement in surface iron stains
2 1 lb per 10,000 G did not do it for me, Used 5 lbs for the pool
3. Deeper areas less effect
4. After 1 hour 60% cleared
5. After 2 hours perhaps 80% cleared
6. Remaining stains seem to be the same as the stains that lifted
7. I only had 1 qt of Jacks purple stuff and job called for 2 quarts (poor preparation by me)
8. Decision time: Give this process more time or drain and repeat?
9. Second to last: Kids want to swim in pool until I make up my mind: ph 7.2 added Purple jack and of course 5 lb of vit C and 3 hours ago muriatic acid. Is it safe
10. And I am not kidding. While tight walking on my spa wall, I lost balance and did fall in with all my clothes on. My wife says that was good for a laught but I did not turn into the "incredible hulk" from the toxins

Couple of more questions:
1. assuming the stains are all iron, what stands in the way of perfection ie complete clearing of stain? Is a physical thing like Vitamin C can penetrate only so deep? Is it chemical in that it takes a certain amount of moles of Vit C to change the oxidative state of iron? Is it that the water becomes saturated with iron an no more can go into solution? Or other? Would going higher that 2.5 lbs per 10,000 gallons be of any benefit?

Results: You can see remarkable results from images 1 and 2 going to image 3 and 4. But bottom of pool has a mottled look. The very light areas might be from further discoloration around a clean area or they may be another substance. I am not sure if I should do further analysis or repeat this whole process. As mentioned above I used more Vit C than recommended thinking there was so much iron it required more ascorbic.
