A renter with a pool!

With some overflow and the test error, you could get to where you are from where you were.

Add some salt. I would suggest you raise your FC to 20% of CYA. See how the water looks tomorrow.

Your CYA should be at least 70 ppm with a SWCG. If your CYA is 30ppm, I would raise the FC to 10 ppm until you get things settled.

Add 600-800 ppm salt.
Your salt test has a +/- 200 ppm accuracy. The cell readout has a +/-400 ppm accuracy.

The best way to test is with a bucket! put a bucket of water next to your pool and see if they both loose water at the same rate, they should both drop the same amount. The only other way you would loose salt is if its diluted (from the rains for example) and you drain some off to keep it from overflowing, or backwashing to waste. CYA will degrade over time, but salt doesn't. but that is weird.

I’ll try the bucket - good idea.

But that being said I’ve drained off zero water.

I put in 40 # of salt this morning (which the calculator indicates should raise me 400ppm) and after an hour the SWG was still indicating low salt. I’ll check again when I get home this evening.

test from this morning:

Salt - 3000ppm (after adding 40# on Friday)
Chlorine - 9.5ppm
CC .5ppm
CH 100
TA 50
pH 7.9
CYA 30

I'll be adding enough CA to attempt to get to 60 today. This pool eats MA for lunch but my TA is getting low(it's really head to keep my pH in range). What should I do?

Thanks!

Do you have water features? Your pH should stabilize at 7.8 to 8 with the TA level you show.

I'm aware that there is a +/- on these tests, however...

40# of salt raised me to 3000ppm. Should I add another 40# of salt?

I just put in 2 1/2 # of dry acid (in a sock hanging in the skimmer basket). That "should" bring me up to 60 CYA. Go ahead and aim for 4 FC now? Right now, I'm trying to keep it at 10ppm per the earlier comment.

Also, I have tested .5 CC the last few tests. Is that anything to worry about now?

I'm still really struggling with CYA testing. The idea of "until you don't see the black dot at all" seems subjective.

Just came across this thread and was reading along and hit this comment. I used to hate the CYA test too. I have exceptional visual acuity, so I always thought, "well, what if it disappears for me after it would for an average person?" Here's what I do. Because the resolution of the graduations on the CYA test are only 10 CYA increments, there's certainly no point in trying to get more accurate than that. So, when I'm filling my tube, I first add my sample like you normally would, by pouring it in and watching the dot from above. As the dot starts getting kind of blurry, I switch my line of sight to the side of the tube, where the graduations are. I continue to add water until I reach the next line. When I hit that line, I bring the tube down to waist height and take a glance (not a hard stare) down the tube. Do I see the dot after about a second? If so, then I add water until I reach the next line. Then look at it from above once again. I repeat this until I can't see the black dot when glancing down the tube for a second or two. Then I record the associated CYA value as my CYA level. Hope that helps!

Hello everyone!

Happy to report that my water is crystal clear! I have a couple of questions. My pH always very quickly makes its way over 8. I can add acid to get the pool to 7.4 or so and in a day or two it's back up over 8. Also, I've never been able to get the CYA to 70. Last year I added over 5 pounds (and got to about 40). This year I've added about 4 #'s (two pounds about 4 weeks ago and two pounds last week) and I'm at 40. I was at zero for my first test of the year. My TA and CH stay very stable. My numbers test numbers for today are:

5PM
temp 85F
pH 8.2
FC 7
CC .5
salt 2800
CH 75
TA 70
CYA 40

Thanks in advance for the help!

Have y’all had the crazy rain down in BR that we’ve been getting up here in Alabama? We’re already 22” above average for the year and it’s made my life as the family pool man aggravating. SWG is already going to keep your PH closer to 8, but lots of rain can drive it north too. And if you’re having to pump out lots of water because of the heavy rain, you’re going to lose TDS like CYA, CH, and salt. Just a thought. Two questions: what kind of liner do you have, and if you happen to be filling from the tap more so than from the sky, have you tested your tap water chemistry?

Yeah - the rain has been a little crazy!

If the SWG will keep the pool closer to 8 should I continue to try to keep it lower or let it stay at 8?

I've never needed to drain or add from the tap (there is a chance there is a small leak but the water level has never gone below the tile).

No liner - gunite.
