5400Gal Pool + 180lb Salt @48 hours = only 400ppm??

Hello! We have an 18’x48” 5455gal pool using well water. We miscalculated and put 4 full bags of Clorox pool salt from Wal-Mart (99% pure) and another half bag of old unknown brand salt that came with the pool

We stirred it around and waiting 24 hours. Not seeing any salt clumped at the bottom The test ( Clorox salt test, 82100CLX) showed About 2 which the test kit starts at 3 @ 730ppm

We waiting 48 hours, and tested again. We are now seeing 2.2ppm

We are thoroughly confused. Over 5000Gal, 180Lbs of salt, and a reading of less than the minimum chart reading of 730 after 48 hours.

Our salt chlorinator gives an error of low salt. It’s a used Intex unit so at first we were thinking it just wasn’t working correctly, but that’s just another story entirely. We can’t even get the proper salt test readings! (Pulls our grey hair)

Ive attaches photos of a new test and the used test. Please help.

Hey tasty and welcome !! You should be plenty mixed up by now. Pool math said 152 lbs would take you from 0 to 3300ppm. If the strips don't agree, they are bad. Salt does not go bad, its as old as the earth. Also for future use only buy 100% salt. Clorox is well known to put iron in its pool salt eventhough they should know better. There are only a select few clorox products that don't harm your pool, and their bleach isn't one of them. I'm not sure if it's sad or funny that they sell so many pool products that harm more than they help.

Is Morton’s Pool salt any good? If not is there a recommended brand you suggest?

what you said makes a lot of sense. We’re going to purchase an electronic salt tester on amazon for $15. Hopefully it’s got a decent enough accuracy.

Mortons is good and so is Diamond Brite. Whatever you find just make sure it says pure, no additives or 100%. They make pool salt and water softener salt. The crystals are bigger for water softeners so it takes a few extra hours to dissolve.

The Taylor K1766 salt test (drops) is $27 most places and is as accurate as you can get. To save $15 on all the other ones its just not worth it when they don't work.
