1st time pool guy

Thanks, I found some at walmart. 4lb bag...said it treats up to 20k gallons, which is close est. to my pool. Says its supposed to raise it 30ppm. gonna put that, borax and chlorine in now

It rained alot last 2 days, but tests today were:
pH 7.8
FC 3
CC 0
TA 90
CH 80

Duraleigh mentioned not needing to do CYA again for now, since I just added. When should I check it again?

CYA is very stable. It tends to stay the same in your pool mostly throughout the season as long as you don't use pucks or Tri-chlor.

I would probably check it again in a week or so to confirm it stable and then perhaps once monthly over the swim season.

Looking back through the thread, it looks like this is a fresh fill. If you added four pounds of CYA to a 20,000 gallon pool, your CYA will be 24 ppm (per Pool Math). Assuming you're confident of the pool's volume, you'll probably want to add at least one more pound. Since fresh water contains no CYA, Pool Math will provide a more accurate estimate of the actual level than the CYA test itself.

Edit: Using Pool Math, I got a lower volume than your estimate..somewhere around 17,000-18,000 gallons depending on the water level. You may be just under 30 ppm, but adding an additional pound of CYA wouldn't hurt.

Please use pool math for additions/calculations! The app is free.
Not what is listed on the package of products - it’s not very accurate & it leads to poor results

So, Had over 2" of rain 2 days ago. Had to dump some water as it was over skimmer cover. I tested water:
pH 7.2
FC 0
CC 0
CYA 30
TA 90
CH 80

I put in 2lbs of borax and gallon of bleach (per pool math). Today, pH was same, FC was 0.6 and CYA 30. Should I be chasing the pH or just focus on adding chlorine? It seemed weird that rain would drop the pH by 6

Well, here are the tests today:
pH 7.8
FC 3
CC 0
CYA 40
TA 110
CH 80

Guess I should have waited a couple days to check pH again. I added borax and now its higher. I did FC/CYA levels which said I needed 1 more gallon of bleach, so hope that should do it for now.
I was trying to get pH back to where it was, but 7.2 is min value so like mknauss said, I probably didn't need the borax. Will keep that in mind. Thank you

pH 8
FC 0.2
CC 0
CYA 40
TA 110
CH 80

I think the pH and TA have gone up from the borax a couple days ago. I guess I need at least 50 CYA since my FC is almost nothing. Supposed to get CYA in on Monday, but cautious about putting it in and having it get too high. Will a somewhat higher level (50 or 60) keep the FC higher? I don't want to have to dump a gallon of chlorine into pool daily, but don't want to get CYA to a point where I have to drain pool.
Any tips (even just to tell me to relax a bit and let things pan out) ;-)

A CYA of 40 right now is sufficient. You might go to 50 in late June or July.

You need to add chlorine every day and keep your FC in the target range.

5/6
ph 8.2
FC 2
CC 0
TA 100
CH 80
CYA 40
My pH has been creeping up but don't want to start chasing that with acid yet. I keep adding chlorine as recommended by pool math to get to 5-6 target FC, but never seems to hit. I put almost another gallon in after these tests. Any ideas or just keep adding chlorine? thanks
