Need help with Chlorine Demand test!!!

Switch to a 5ml pool sample, then each drop is 1.0 FC instead of 0.5.

You can skip the other tests until your SLAM is over.

e: If you run out of 871, just keep adding about the same amount of bleach you have been until your refill arrives.

I managed to get the FC level to 23 when I last tested.
after that keep adding the necessary bleach (26oz) every 2 hours.

this morning I tested with the last 871 I have, it is showing FC 13.
i will add another 2 gallons to bring it up to shock levels.
But not sure how much chlorine I need to add?

can I just maintain the FC (7) needed by adding Bleach daily as my water is very clear?
i plan to close the pool end of Aug anyway.
will do a refill when I open the pool next Spring.

thanks

It's your pool, you can do what you want :) If it were my pool, I would be sure to finish a SLAM before closing for the winter to be sure I didn't have any issues come spring.

Hi Mr. Bruce,
yes I am continuing with the slam.
But difficult to judge the amount of bleach to be added w/o 871.
My order has shipped and hopefully get it today or tomorrow.

is it OK to swim in the pool with FC around 24?
Thanks

If you have been testing and dosing regularly, you can guess-timate about how much bleach you should be adding based on the past few days.

If your CYA is still 60, yes. It is safe to swim up to SLAM levels. (and you can see to the bottom and pH is in the 7s)

So as long as I am in the FC level based on my CYA it is safe to swim.
Also the pump has been running for over 2 days non stop.
At some point I need yo to give it a break
Thx
You are correct, below shock level is safe to swim.

As to the pump, all pool pumps are continuous duty rated, meaning they were designed for continuous 24/7 usage.

2 days is nothing. I had a friend run their pump for 6 weeks straight.

If you started with clear water, and the FC has been holding better and better, you are not far from the end. You will need your refill(s) to perform an OCLT but until then try not to lose any ground by continuing to add bleach and run your pump.

I think I am making some progress here. At least I wish that is the case :)
i have been adding 50 oz every 2 hours.
Did a test with what is left of the R871, I see FC 18 and CC 0
It was a very sunny day today.
hopefully tomorrow with the new supply of R871 I should be able to get a better handle on this.

Hello all,
Last night around 9:30 PM I added about 160 OZ of Bleach.
This morning I tested and FC is 20 and CC 0

This is encouraging. As per tracking I should get my test solution today.
i will continue to SLAM and do the overnight test tonight.

The water looks sparkling clean. I will also do a brushing and look for any algae around light fixture and skimmers.
i don't have a ladder or other fixtures in my pool.

Hello All,
I have been adding 3 70OZ of bleach every 2 hours as I have no way of testing the chlorine levels.
At 3 PM received the refill from TFP.

Tested at 3:30 FC 31.5 and CC .2
Stopped adding bleach
Tested again at 4:30 FC 36 CC .2
Did another test at 8 PM FC 38 CC .2

I am not planning to add any more bleach.
Should I assume the SLAM is done ?

Also having a pool part on Saturday.
Hopefully Chlorine level will be alright by then.
Never thought I will be worrying about too much FC.

Thanks

It is safe to swim when
FC is above minimum and up to shock level for your CYA, [FC/CYA][/FC/CYA]
PH Is between 7.2 and 7.8
And the water is clear

There are three criteria to pass to know that a SLAM is complete shown here, SLAM Process

My CYA was 60 when I started the SLAM on Sunday
so the shock level I was aiming was 24.

it rained heavily on Sat night, I had to drain some Water prior to the start of SLAM.
I checked today and see it is still between 55 and 60.

since my FC is above shock level I will stop adding bleach and monitor FC.
if it stays around 36 in the morning which was my last reading, should I stop the SLAM?

I didn't measure PH and Alkalinity today.
My water was very clear when I started the SLAM

Don't bother with pH testing until FC gets below 10.

You are sure you have passed tow prongs of the test, water is clear and CC less than .5

Tomorrow morning will be the big test, less than 1ppm FC loss overnight and you are done.

I tested the water this morning and FC 31 and CC .2
My last reading was FC 38, so last around 7 PPM

will keep testing and maintain the level at 24 PPM which is the range for my CYA level.
Till it comes down to 24 I will not add more bleach. just let the pump run

the last dose of Bleach added was around 2:30 PM yesterday

My 3:30 test showed 31.5
but 4:30 and 8 PM tests had 36 and 38 PPM FC
This mornings test was 31 PPM

thanks

Folks,
i really need your guidance and help.
I did another test just now and the FC is 35 and CC is still 0.2

How can FC fluctuate this much?
is anything else going on?

We we stopped adding any chemical for almost 20 hours now.

please advise

No. I removed the pucks for over a month now.
only source of chlorine is bleach I pour in the pool.

unless if anything wrong with the R0871 solution?
Because I never got this high FC even when I added 3 gallons at a time.

It is most likely your testing that is fluctuating. Unless you are using a SWG in addition to manual doses, FC levels do not rise on their own, they lower as the chlorine is consumed.

Tips:
Keep the bottle of 871 as vertical as possible while dropping, and go slowly, letting the drop form and naturally fall off. I try to drop no faster than one per second.

Sample size is important, try to be as consistent as possible. Are you still using a 5ml sample?

Dom
