    Check Those Date Codes

This is what they had up front near the garden center cashier at my local Lowes today 22 325. In back with the pool stuff it was 23 102. Not super fresh but a whole lot better than last year’s stock.

    There's a slow train's coming...

Is that a thing? With enough effort, could I develop the skills to just taste the water and know what to add? Like a human TF-100!

    Yeah I work in Hanford.

    There's a slow train's coming...

I feel bad for the pool guys -- people on Nextdoor where I am complaining like you wouldn't believe that their pool guy has had to increase his prices. But don't get me started on the water. Where I live, there are miles and miles and miles and miles of almond orchards. I see them on my...

    Borates. Better practices

Glad I'm not the only one, my borates is somewhere between 30 and 50, I think. I basically go by what I put in, then guesstimate the loss over time based on how my CYA and calcium have changed. I was at Leslie's one day to pick up acid and asked if they tested for borates. Their response was...

    Borates: Before and After Pics

I just added borates a few days ago. I can get Solubor free at work, so cost was not an issue, and I figured, why not? pH buffering is a good enough reason for me. I feel like my water looks more clear, and a bit more sparkly than before. But pretty sure it's not enough that anyone else...

    Using Liquid Calcium Chloride

It varies. Usually around 25, but sometimes it's 100 if the city is running groundwater instead of surface water. I'm at 400 right now, and looking at a 50% replacement, and I'll probably try to overshoot that since it's a lot easier to being CYA back up then to have not gone far enough. So...

    Using Liquid Calcium Chloride

Or now that I think about it, is it more like 3 to 1, so take the pool math dry weight and multiply it by about 3 to get the liquid weight to use?

    Using Liquid Calcium Chloride

Hello, I'm going to do a water replacement to get my CYA down, and it's possible I'll have to bring my CH back up when done. I have access to free 12% Ca liquid calcium chloride. Does anyone have any numbers to translate it to the Calcium Chloride calculation used in pool math (I'm assuming...

    Poorly Treated Bleach

Haha, no, an organic fertilizer plant. We use bleach for sanitation of equipment, and buy it in bulk.

    Poorly Treated Bleach

I think it may even be less than 2.5%. I've tried to use it again, and chlorine is not coming up much at all. I brought home a 5 gal. pail of it, and went through it in a couple days. I just ordered a fresh tote of the 12.5%, so we'll see how much better that works!

    Poorly Treated Bleach

Results are in... Only got up to 6.5 ppm. So it has degraded from 12.5% sodium hypochlorite down to around 2.5%. So there you go, keep your chlorine cool and out of the sun.

    Poorly Treated Bleach

Just tested my water: FC 5.5 CC 0 pH 7.6 TA 60 CH 425 CYA 60 Setting a target FC of 8 ppm, Pool Math says to add 78 oz of 6% chlorine, or 38 oz of 12.5%. Assuming this has degraded around 50%, I did the 6% recommendation of 78 oz. Going to let the pump run for a bit, and see where we are at...

    Poorly Treated Bleach

I decided to start bringing some bleach home from work to use in my pool. We buy 330 gal. totes of 12.5% bleach, but prior to visiting this site I was not really aware that sodium hypochlorite degrades in heat. Our storage practices have been... not great. Going to at least need to start...
