Weird noise/cavitation intermittently w/ pump. No problems suction or pressure side. I'm stumped.

FYI Problem solved, details in VGreen 1.65HP Programming post Was a bad pump motor, replaced with a VGreen 1.65 variable speed. Had a couple of gotchas in the replacement but all sorted now.

Thanks Chris. My pool equipment room is indoors/enclosed (though of course well vented) so unless something goes seriously wrong, shouldn't need to worry about water incursion through the wire cover screw, or I've got much more serious things to worry about :-)

FYI, all fixed, I had 4 various issues getting it to work, some were lessons to me, but perhaps tips to others: 1) My multimeter was bad, reading high on AC. I started from scratch, AC input to the EasyTouch 4 was reading 260+ volts across the two hots, 137-ish for each hot lead. Bizarre...

Re the wiring, I think I might have a relay problem or such. I recall measuring 246v between L1 and L2 at the pump when I was diagnosing the 'goofy mode' problems previously, see previous thread. Seeing that now I'm getting almost no volts, I can only guess that something weird is happening at...

Weird noise/cavitation intermittently w/ pump. No problems suction or pressure side. I'm stumped.

FYI I did pull and did full cleaning of the terminals. Measured 246v between L1 and L2 so it was getting 240v. Was still having the problems, so I decided to replace the motor with a Centrry VGreen 165.

Thanks Chris! One Q re how you do your heater - I like that idea. Do you have a chicken/egg re flow control to turn on the gas valve, or is the 1700 rpm still enough flow to allow the heater to operate? My heater (RayPak) won't fire if there isn't a sufficient flow (I assume it's an internal...

Sorry edited above, said IntelliFo when it's a WhisperFlo I had and replaced.

Merged threads - TFP Mod Just installed a new Vgreen 165 in place of a 1hp Pentair WhisperFlo that was having problems. It won’t fire up - no green power LED. Running from a Pentair EasyTouch 4 Panel. Checked wiring. When pump on, have 120v from green to L1 (black) and 120v from green to L2...

Thanks Jim, I understand how to do the Vgreen relay side, what I don’t understand is the programming side in the control center- ie. how to get the programs (like Spa or Spillway vs default Pool) to get a control voltage per program. I don’t want to use the aux relays as I want the variable...

I posted yesterday Pentair Motor replacement & control Q but did a bunch of research, I need to replace the 1HP full rated 1.65 S.F. motor for my Pentair WFE-4 WhisperFlo pump. I've ordered the Century VGreen 1.65HP variable speed motor model EPM16SQ which is the almond version of the ECM16SQU...

Pentair Motor replacement & control Q

In a previous thread I documented the strange problems I was having with my Pentair WhisperFlo, you can also see how I determined it's a motor problem. Weird noise/cavitation intermittently w/ pump. No problems suction or pressure side. I'm stumped. So it's a Pentair WhisperFlo 1hp WFE-4 pump...

Weird noise/cavitation intermittently w/ pump. No problems suction or pressure side. I'm stumped.

Short answer, I think I need a new motor and might just do the whole pump while I'm at it. It's 8 years old. . I'd love some advice. Any reason anyone can think of to not just order a new motor and seal kit, for half the price of a full new WhisperFlo? Looks like I'd save (~$300 for motor plus...

Weird noise/cavitation intermittently w/ pump. No problems suction or pressure side. I'm stumped.

Here's the other pic I was going to post. 90 degrees to right of the other one. You can see that it's super tight where the electrical goes into the pump. To see there I need my head about where the screw closure is for the cartridge filter, and I need to thread my hands and arms around various...

Weird noise/cavitation intermittently w/ pump. No problems suction or pressure side. I'm stumped.

ARGHH!! It's back! Decided to test it one more time before heading out of town, and it went back into goofy mode. Leaving tomorrow am and don't have time to pull the motor off and do a proper cleaning of the terminals, as well as validate that it's always getting +120 through each of the two...

If you don't count the day of trying everything else on the planet, before I had suck it up and hurt my delicate ego and ask others for help :) Definitely weird!

Weird noise/cavitation intermittently w/ pump. No problems suction or pressure side. I'm stumped.

With the cover not fully seated, I suspect some moisture got in and got a little corrosion on the connections. Add a not-super-tight connection which probably meant minimal effective contact area, and I guess it couldn't always pull the startup current, so guess the motor kicked into 'unbalanced...

Weird noise/cavitation intermittently w/ pump. No problems suction or pressure side. I'm stumped.

Next step was to swap the entire pump assembly, $500, would have worked as I would have of course redone the wiring at the motor, but I'm much happier now. As an engineer it makes me a crazy to not fully understand the root cause of problems. Not a huge fan of 'replace things until the problem...

Weird noise/cavitation intermittently w/ pump. No problems suction or pressure side. I'm stumped.

FIXED!!!! (I think, time will tell) Thank you @Chad1979, looks like that was the problem. I pulled the wiring access cover on the motor, the rubber gasket was half an inch out of whack. Pulled and reseated the connections, top pole was a little loose so tightened the spade connector a bit...

Weird noise/cavitation intermittently w/ pump. No problems suction or pressure side. I'm stumped.

It's 220. That was one of my theories (#3 in my original post). I've of course switched the two-pole pump breaker at the ET control panel on and off, I guess I can pull the electrical access panel off the back of the pump, and test it live in both modes to see if both poles are hot at the...

Weird noise/cavitation intermittently w/ pump. No problems suction or pressure side. I'm stumped.

No check valves. Here are a couple of pics. I'm uploading and will shortly post another ~2:00 video (slow internet so will take me 15 minutes or so). In it, I turn the pump on, all working great, fills pump, good flow. Turn pump off and on, goes immediately into goofy mode. I then (in the...

Weird noise/cavitation intermittently w/ pump. No problems suction or pressure side. I'm stumped.

About 2/3 way up. about 2" above level where any air will be drawn into the skimmer. No vortex. There's no air coming into the suction side. Any residual air (just at pump startup) is pushed back from a bubble I get at the top of the cartridge filter. Again, this will happen in an identical...

Weird noise/cavitation intermittently w/ pump. No problems suction or pressure side. I'm stumped.

Did that, sorry for the long post, lots of details I had hidden in there :-) Diffuser and impeller look fine, no debris, cracks etc. Diffisuer O-ring has never lost a drop of water, inside of housing looked brand new, not a drop of water in there. I didn't remove the impeller from the shaft...

Weird noise/cavitation intermittently w/ pump. No problems suction or pressure side. I'm stumped.

Yes and yes, as well as double checking the O ring at the union just before the pump. That was an initial theory I had. When pump in 'normal' (quiet) mode, not a single air bubble getting into the system. The air in the video is there because I'd stopped the system, and after a while I get...

Setup the waterfall with Pentair Easy Touch

You should be able to do this manually, I do this regularly with my ET, I already have my circuits used so haven't programmed a circuit for this. From the EasyTouch control panel, I just set Mode to Service (or TimeOut if you want it to automatically shut off after a couple of hours), push the...

Hi folks! New member here. I hope it's ok for my first post to be a request rather than helping someone else out, but now that I'm here I'm happy to help. I'm not in the industry, I'm a homeowner that happens to be an engineer, so I maintain and repair all my own systems. I have a very strange...
