I think you are missing a tubing, that allow to bleed the air.. But I am not an expert, so wait for others to confirm...

I usually slowly add 1/4 cup of DE through the skimmer to improve filtration and I always look at my return, and never saw any cloud of DE coming out, but I know every pool is different ...
